A lot has been said about Temple Kung-Fu on this forum - angry rants, useful info, court transcripts - you name it… Although unlikely to change the minds of some, there are probably at least a few TKF students reading this forum and suffering harsh, sinking feelings (judging by the # of hits the TKF megathread gets).
It can be difficult to make a change, especially when one has invested a substantial amount of time/money(!) in their present school, made good friends, etc.
I thought it might be helpful if people had a list of other options in their area.
Following are areas with TKF franchises. If you train martial arts in these areas (Chinese or otherwise) and have had a positive experience with your school (or if you teach), please post the info/area. I took the liberty of adding a list for Vancouver (orig. posted by Firepalm in the ‘TKF megathread’) as well as Brent Carey in Spokane for a start. Hopefully this will turn into a useful list.

Hmm. Not sure this Carey guy can be trusted. Also in my area is a place called Eagle Dragon Kung-Fu kungfu.uswestdex.com. I know absolutely nothing about them, so can’t recommend one way or another.

There are a couple other places that advertise that they teach kung fu, but according to first and second-hand accounts, you’ll basically get Kenpo or something like it.

Those places are:
Aaction Kenpo Karate (yes it’s spelled with 2 "A"s)
Lotus Self-Defense (claims to teach a hybrid of Judo, Kenpo, Aikido, Kung Fu, and Muay Thai)

I’ve heard fairly good reports about Lotus, but you won’t get much kung fu as I understand and from what I’ve seen. I don’t know anything about Aaction Kenpo except that I’ve heard that they are an OK Kenpo school.

Also, Northwest Tai Chi has been marketing more visibly lately. I have heard mixed reviews from unreliable sources. They advertise Tai Chi and Qi Gong emphasizing stress, balance, flexibility, and focus benefits.

Also, as always, anyone in the Spokane area looking for training can contact me. I may or may not be the teacher for you, but I should be able to steer you in the right direction.

Not a bad idea. I know that there are a ton of MA directories on the web, but I don’t know of any that are specifically for CMA.

Does anyone know of one? If not, I would volunteer to help create one. I get a ton of enquiries all the time asking for help finding a school either here in Spokane, or elsewhere.

Ideally, someone like KF Magazine would host the directory, but they may not wish to for several understandable reasons (advertisers, perceived endorsements, etc). If not, I would volunteer to build and host the directory if one or two people volunteered to help populate it.

Of course, if a good directory already exists that I don’t know about, there’s no point reinventing the wheel.

Thanks guys - looks like we’re getting some good raw data together at least - perhaps to be posted later in a more comprehensive format (?). Good idea about the directory, although I agree with, uh… not reinventing the wheel ;). I’d be glad to contribute what I can however.

Well, I’m from Seattle so we have at least a couple TKF schools around here. We even have some converts at my school.

Sifu Mak teaches traditional Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu. He has over 35+ years experience. He started out in traditional southern praying mantis and knows some Hung Ga and Yang Taiji. He is regarded by many people to be the “King of the Lion Dance.”
We also have a visiting Sifu, Sifu Chu. He teaches Hung Ga, Nan Quan Wushu and Yang Taiji. He teaches privately out of our school. Both these guys are very traditional and very kick ass. Be prepared to do a lot of performing though.

The other place I train is the

The main teacher is Shr Fu Harrison Moretz. He teaches traditional Chen Style Taiji and Hun Yuan Chi Gong. Xing Yi and Bagua Zhang classes are also available although Taiji is his main gig. There are a whole range of other classes and seminars available through the institute also ranging from Traditional Chinese Medicine to Chinese Language Classes. I might also add that Harrison is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and is a licensed acupuncturist. Very good stuff but definitely more of a “hippy” atmosphere than the kung fu school. Don’t be fooled though, Harrison really understands the “internals” and how to use them, especially joint locking. There is also a Northern Praying Mantis Sifu that teaches out of the school although I’ve never seen him perform before so I can’t say if it is any good or not.

Well that’s a couple of options, although I’m sure there is some other good stuff around Seattle. . There are lot’s of good teachers out there but you’re probably not gonna find them with the big full page add in the yellow pages. Good luck and beware!!!

Cheers oilslickman - there seem to be quite a few on this forum who have had some negative experiences before going on to train something they really enjoy. You’ll find something that fits. It just takes a little longer sometimes…
