Hey fiercest tiger click here: my styles list praying mantis is 63rd on the list. I don’t have info on any of them(still researching), but I have different styles listed. I came across a really great mantis website with lots of info randomly surfing one day but didn’t save the url
I also left off Secret Door by mistake.

In Short

guys how man styles are there of northern mantis, and which one is more known or should i say popular?
Up to 12, Babu, Mimen, HuaLin, Chi Xing, MeiHua, Liu He, TaiJiMeiHua, Tai JI, etc….most popular outside of China – Chi Xing, inside China Mei Hua & Chi Xing
are there much differences between 7 star, 8 step, 6 harmonies, and whatever other one there are? There is an essence that is similar amongst most but in actuality their strategies and powers differer. Especially Liu He compared to ChiXing, or Mimen to Chi Xing etc…… Thus realistically it is like comparing Long Ying and Bak Mei sometimes and others it is like comparing Hung Gar to Bak Mei. But they are not as similar as say YKM to Bak Mei
are the forms the same names and training principles?
Forms different names except for essential ones like beng bu that most have but is actually different amongst different divisions. Training principles fundamental ones like the character principles, soft power principles, hard principles etc are typically crossed over, but more in depth principles become unique as one advances. Especially for versions integrated with other styles such as Liu He, BaBu tc

Fiercest Tiger,

try this link: www.authentickungfu.com It’s a nice site, with some info on the Praying Mantis styles. It’s focused on seven star, but ilustrates some ramifications.

Found it!

Praying Mantis Kungfu here’s that site I was talking about.

Another.

Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis is quite a popular style across the US and several other countries.

http://www.wahlum.com/

Everyone knows that Master Chan Poi made it up by mixing wushu. How come his people never fight? They can’t.

Tam Tui Tang Long is very good.

I don’t have a signature because I have no pen to write it.

Wrong.

Actually Asiansifu, you are quite mistaken, and we fight very well. Many in our school have fought and placed in various tournaments. I sure Master Chan, or Mimi, would be more than happy to enlighten you on all matters of the style. Your comments do a disservice, and are rude and gratuitous, to Kung Fu and those who practice Wah Lum.

one link i found…

that seems to explain some of what you are looking for (though i have no idea of it’s crediblity) is this:

made uup with wu shu?

What the?Who told you that?It was Master Lee Kwan Shan who founded the style. He had his family style and went to wah lum temple(the one in china) and learned jut sow tong long from abbot Chin Yeung.

Who told you it was mixed with wu shu?It got’s nothing to do with wu shu.If you mean by how the forms look in competitions is because we don’t want peope copying our authentic forms.

To think while everyone was saying how bad you were I had respect for you.Now I know what they meant. You lost my respect with that statement.

Just like JediMan said we do fight.I don’t know where you get your info from.

“Always be ready”

thanks guys

we should be arguing over styles, but understanding the differences.

keep on training

wah lum fighting

What kind of fighting are you talking about?
Tournament fighting or street fighting? How would you know if nobody street faught?
Many wah lum student excel in forms and win many competitions, it doesn’t mean they don’t fight but if you are competing in forms why take the chance on an injury in fighting?
Tournament fights are nothing like a real fight so it is a pretty ignorant statement.
Troy Prov. won a gold medal in China in fighting so go tell him he can’t fight!!

Why

(bowin in)
Why would you say that?? The first gung fu form were not used as a fighting form , though they had fighting applications. They were used as a form of exercise, also for mental and physical inlightment. (ie 18 lo han form, hint, hint Damo, buddia) If you say this you are not learning gung fu ( if you are learning at all) you are just learning to fight; and then the point of you learning will never been attained. If you want to learn who to street fight, I am from Chicago . I will take you back home and we can take it from there.

Power over strengh, Knowledge over ignorance.

(Bowing out)

fighting

Wah Lum students generally don’t train or compete in sparring because we don’t focus on point fighting or rules limited fighting. Our schools are traditional, Master Chan is traditional. Our techniques are not allowed in competition. I had the same problem when I studied Kenpo, a street fighting style. Even full contact is limiting. I’m sure most schools have this same problem which is why you rarely see anyone fighting the style.

As for street training I haven’t found anyone willing to let me practice eye gouges or arm breaks on them so that type of training is out as well.

AsianSifu,
Wherever do you get your facts? Do you get facts?

Chan Poi’s style is not made up. I have spoken to sifu Paul Eng who’s his good friend. Eng has told me many personal things in the past about things in the kung fu community but he has never said that Chan Poi’s style is fake.

In fact, Eng has said that Chan Poi uses his hip, kua and spinal cord very well.
