YUEN Woo-ping is to direct a remake of his own The Miracle Fighters (1982). TSUI Hark is on board as writer and producer.

The original fantasy comedy was about a young warrior who uses the martial arts skills he learned from two Taoist priests to defeat an evil sorcerer in a competition.

Yuen says that aside from sharing the title of the film, Miracle Fighters will tell an entirely new story. He said that if the original film was meant to present an alternative form of wuxia film, the new film intends to redefine it. The filmmakers did not divulge the plot at this time.

In addition to writing the script, Tsui is producing with Nansun Shi under his Film Workshop Co Ltd banner.

The film will be Yuen and Tsui’s first collaboration since Black Mask 2: City of Masks (2002) more than a decade ago. The duo’s previous collaborations include Once Upon a Time in China II (1992) and The Twin Dragons (1992).

The new Miracle Fighters is set to begin production after the Lunar New Year holiday with theatrical release set for 2017.

This is really promising.
