Live-In schools Sydney (ps..Serpent........clear your dammed inbox!!)

I’m English. I went to an English Grammar School. I’m a certified English teacher. I’ve taught English people, Welsh people, Japanese people, teachers, professors, Masters students, politicians, scientists, priests, soldiers, business managers, advertising directors, children, and retards.

My Oxford Essential English Grammar for Beginners, Intermediate English Grammar in Use, Advanced English Grammar in Use, Concise Oxford Dictionary, and my English lecturer’s notes which are all within reach, all agree with MK. Not that I have to look. It is even acceptable, though not nowadays standard, to use an " 's" after a singular noun such as “Vegas’s” to indicate possession.

You are, as usual, full of sh:t.

[Note: this was directed at bl, not Mat. Mat posted while I was writing it… and I agree with Mat]

Depends on how many parents he was intending to refer to. I only have one parent, therefore I could not ( for example) talk about my parents’ belongings, only my parent’s belongings.

And unless someone is living in a rather unorthodox situation, it’s pretty unlikely that they are going to refer to their mothers’ whatever, as this indicates that they have more than one mother. Not impossible, depending on your point of view, but certainly unusual.

Anyway, I don’t really see that you have a leg to stand on in picking on someone else’s possible misplacement of an apostrophe, as I can’t recall ever once seeing a post from you that came even close to obeying the accepted standards for comprehensible written communication. At least Toby makes a serious effort to make sense. Trying to read your posts reminds me of trying to have a conversation with someone on both speed and acid with a serious mental/emotional disorder. Except this late post of yours, which was comprehensible but still, strictly speaking, abominably written.

All of a suden I’m starting to understand why so many Chinese-to English subtitles are barely legible…:frowning:

LMAO at Becca!

trolling aside…I understand what you’re all saying…but changing a language structure for convenience doesn’t make it structurally correct…comming on to twelve dys straight work with as little as an hr and a half sleep at times…so I’m outta here.

peace

BL, please read that last post of yours and heed your own words.

“changing a language structure for convenience doesn’t make it structurally correct”

The only person who does this on a regular basis is YOU!!!

I’m pulled up on this daily, and you think you "know " me from a series of posts???..lol…you crazy developing dude…sweet and endearing, but just not quite understanding nor onto it…soldier on though …

cheers cerubus,…always good for my daily giggle :stuck_out_tongue:

Once again, you missed the point. Did that post comment on “you” or my “knowing” you? No. It commented on your English abilities. And yes, after reading many posts by you over several months, I do “know” your abilities (or lack thereof) in the language. Again you go flying off in a totally irrelevant direction.

i wanted to teach english overseas, but my understanding of the langauge is crappy. and i speak it all the time. i think i would be a fun teacher. but those japanese girls would get me in trouble :frowning:

You think YOUR understanding of the language is crappy? Dude, if BL can teach English overseas, ANYONE can (no English language abilities needed).

glad to be an inspiration

cerebus,
based on BL’s post a few back, (note the proper use of the posessive) would it be okay if I referred to you henceforth as

“you crazy developing dude” ?

…has a nice ring to it.

and I think it’s safe to say that changing a language structure for convenience makes it wrong.

While we’re nitpicking, I sure wish the ellipsis abuse would stop. It’s three, damn it. Not two, not eleven, three.

dude, whats an ellipsis?

I prefer dudette.

it’s this…

the three periods that signify a pause or that replace removed text in a paragraph.

What’s wrong…with changing language structure as we see fit???

I mean, lanuage is an art. Sticking strictly to tradition kills the art. It needs to be alive, and change with the times!!!

In America, we don’t speak English here anyway, we speak AMERICAN! We only learn English in school because it is the foundation of our language.

Besides, I never had much use for someone who only has one way to spell a word.

yeah, we’ve noticed… both you and bl could benefit from a decent spell checker!

As for the rest of your post, it’s for the sake of consistency - none of us can EVER understand bl, and few can understand no_know when he’s using no_know syntax as opposed to his typical english. If you wanna be understood, don’t alter the structure. feel free to use abbreviations, slang, etc. but don’t change the structure.

Firstly, BL you are wrong about the use of apostrophe, everyone else is right. Get hold of a book call ‘Eats, Shoots & Leaves’ by Lynne Truss. It gives provides instruction on correct use of punctuation.

Secondly RD, a language whether written or spoken is a protocol for communicating with others. It is not an art. Poetry is the use of language as an art. If you are going to deviate from that protocol, then you can expect some problems in communicating with others.

a few great candidates for my " grammatical syntax ( structure) and punctuation lessons" … what ever pleases you

BL, English is a language that is full of exceptions.

did you just do a 360??.. fine…continue to use your incorrect and I won’t even mention it… look I’m an English teachers teacher and I don’t know nor care if alot of you are even educated… sorry, going with the obvious here… like I said, do what pleases you…
