Here is a section of one of the Basic Lama Pai Sets. It’s called “Chaat Sing Kuyhn” or “Seven Star Fist”. I put only 4 of the form’s 7 sections. I thought this would give some people an idea of what Lama Pai looks like (cause all we seem to do here is talk about it - including me!)
So, here it is. It’s actually me doing the form from an instructional tape(s) that we offered in the mid 90’s. So it’s a little blurry…
Hope you guys enjoy it and I don’t have to hear toooo much crap from the wanna-bees or haters.
Merry, if you don’t use a smiley some people can’t tell when you’re joking. I know you’re not either one but others might take it the wrong way.
Lama Pai Sifu
Thanks for the Lama visual. I was interested in seeing how close it was to CLF and some of the other southern stuff I’ve learned from a friend and associate of CTS. Just curious if there were any similarities. Looks good though. Thanks.
Lama uses much higher stances than CLF. It’s more about shifting the waist. I’ll post some CLF clips soon, and you’ll see much lower stances.
Keep in mind, that the first few Lama forms cover mostly basics; Gwa Choi, Kahp Choi, Faan Po, Pao Choi, Biin Choi, Chuyhn Choi, Pak Yick Po, Chuyhn Sum Teui, Jung Choi, Siu Kau Da, Dai Kau Da, Seung Fung Teui, etc.
When you see the whole forms, especially intermediate and advanced one’s, there is really few similarities to CLF. Most of us know, CLF utilizes “Chaat Sing Bouh” or Seven Star Step/footwork. Cutting in and out… Lama uses “Baat Ga Bouh” or Eight-Traigram Footwork. More circular.
Before anyone jumps on that…we all know that CLF uses many different footwork patterns. I’m just making a generalization. Lama uses 8 distinct footwork patterns, some not found in CLF.
Different energy, even though they share a lot of the same techniques.
I will post some application clips tonight or next day or so.
Might the observed cosmetic similarities between CLF and the referenced Lama Pai form be an effect of the Lama Pai teacher -also- being versed in CLF? Unavoidable syncretism?
IIRC, GM Chan Tai San was referenced as being skilled in CLF.
Wood Dragon that is a traditional Lama form, It’s not Sifu Parella that is influencing the form. CLF and Lama are nearly Identical exept one focuses specifacaly on anti trapping and was developed to be an anti Shaolin style.
I don’t think that you are far off, CLF was definatly influenced by Lama tech as it has been influenced by many other styles from the Clear Cloud Monestary aka ( green cloud monestary).
Most people don’t know it’s called the Clear Cloud, We just started to refer to it as CL recently since we always called it GREEN CLOUD!
