Now, I am not talking about ankle weights, everyone knows that those are bad for you. But what if you jog with just a 10 pound weight in each hand? Will this effect you in any way? I was wondering, because I read somewhere that running with weights will make you run faster when you get rid of the weights.
So if you weigh 175, run with 195 worth of weight, then remove the weight, your body is use to the 195 lb. and will move faster. Is this true?
Now, I do NOT use any form of weights when running. I just jog and was wondering if I jog for 10 minutes a day with weights, then the other 20 without them, if I will move faster after a while. Or if this is dangerous. Thanks.
Form is the most important thing when running. You can mess up your back, arms, wrists, ankles, etc. if you run with incorrect form. If it messes with your natural way of running, don’t do it!
As far is being able to run faster without weights if you train with weights…wouldn’t that be the same as weightlifting under a controlled environment to increase muscle strength and endurance ala (leg extentions and curls, and bicep curls)?
The funny thing about running is controlling your breath and when you get tired …pumping your arms to help your legs move faster. This may sound funny, but watch the olympic runners, and you will find out what I mean.
Good luck, be strong.
Ankle weights are bad for just about any fast moving, non-leglift motion. This means they shouldn’t be used to train snapping or thrusting kicks or jogging/running. You shouldn’t walk around in them either.

What are people’s opinions on jogging with weights now? I didn’t want this to branch out into a “Why are ankle weights bad?” I guess I should have said so in my original post.
If you’re trying to improve endurance or sprinting power, it’s probably not the best way. Most athletes looking to add resistance either use a weighted vest, or a small drag chute. Some also tie a rope around their waists and pull a car tyre behing them.
Good distance running is highly gait-efficiency-dependent, and arguably carrying weights would do more harm by messing up your gait than good adding resistance.
Iif you’re looking to increase upper body specific strength, train with weights. Upper body specific endurance, swim or row.
Running with heavy hand weights would be excellent for your grip endurance.
If you are interested in being able to carry weights long distances, consider more the efficiency of your gait and carriage rather than sheer endurance. I saw an interesting post on how a soldier should run with his rifle once, but I doubt I could find it again.
175lbs jogging with two 10lb dumbells isnt necessarily like jogging at 195lbs. See, your arms hold them, and your arms are like levers, with all sorts of leverage and joints and ways to reduce the load. If you had a 20lb vest, THEN it would be like jogging at 195lbs, but two dumbells probably wouldn’t feel the same to your body.
PS. jogging with weight should usually be avoided. Try jogging with a parachute or something to slow you down. I dunno
I think the best way to add weight to a jog is to get a weighted vest or a Life vest filled with sand etc., a Speed Trainer(adds about10-20?lbs of weight to your thighs) and maybe some hand weights that you can use to punch with while you jog. I’m not really sure about the hand weights but I’ve heard about boxers and such using them to strengthen forearms.

4 years ago, I tried jogging with weights.
2 Ten pound dumbells for 1 mile, or 2 5 pounders for 3 miles. Tried to keep my arms bent and make light swinging motions. I found the ten pounders were a little too harsh on the leg joints, but the five pounders made for a great workout. Good for the calf muscles, good for the biceps, wrists, shoulders and back. BTW - this was done on a dirt and gravel surface, not on pavement!! I stopped running for a while, and when I started again, I went for distance, so I didn’t use weights. Now I am not running, I jump rope and stuff because there isn’t the same running venue where I live. But I think it is good exercise unless you are running on a hard surface. Another running variation was shown to me by my ex-instructor - we ran carrying a rattan pole, at the side or over the shoulders like you are carrying two buckets of water (we were not!). This creates a different alignment of the back, which is good if your back gets tight. Of course, people look at you funny. Have fun!
