what makes for a good instructor?:slight_smile:
I was wondering what everyone else thinks is important besides a deep knowledge of his form.

I like instructors who get in there and work with you, they do the technique to you so you feel it done right. You see them do it to someone else so you see it done right at a few different angles.

Generally I like MA who walk the walk.

a well traceable lineage doesn’t urt, i am not saying that an instructor can’t be great without that. but later in your training, if you can examine different branches of the lineage, you can compare the way other schools in the system practice and get maybe a bigger insight to what the style originally waslike and how much drift or innovation or development (change) there has been. also, even if someone didn’t receive lineage in their style but are well trained in it from a good teacher, it’s problematic on one level, but not on others, for example, if you are bound and determined to be a sifu some day in a certain style, well you will run into trouble if you want to open up a school but the granmaster won’t have anything to do with your school because the lineage was broken, or not official. You could still learn say a decades worth of solid material from this teacher but there is that problem with the pedigree so to speak. While perhaps you had the best kung fu in your town regardless

something i really like to see is when they are strong on applications of techniques from forms. also, when they have a positive nature and approachable to talk to. Again, every rule has its exception. Bak Mei! lol. he had plenty to transmit :wink: <– not a winking smiley but rather a one-eyed bak mei victim lol

  1. He/she desires that you learn the system as best YOU can.
  2. Doesn’t mind answering the hard questions about what does and doesn’t work
  3. Willing to show real world applications and not gloss over the weak spots
  4. An understanding that not all students progress at the same rate and therefore
  5. Has patience
  6. Can apply what they teach within certain physical or age limitations and adapt to same.
  7. Desire to spread the system because they LIKE the system
