Press release from Immortal Comics

Dynamite and Immortal Studios Announce Publishing Partnership Ahead of Comic-Con International

July 18, Mt. Laurel, NJ: Ahead of ComicCon International, Dynamite is announcing a new publishing partnership with Immortal Studios, to bring the Los Angeles-based publisher’s shared universe of Wuxia martial arts-fantasy comic books to the broader marketplace. Through the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform, the Los Angeles-based publisher Immortal Studios has to date successfully funded three comic book series as part of a larger shared universe. Now Dynamite is set to bring these action packed titles to the direct market comic stores, digital vendors, bookstores, and beyond in multiple formats, with more releases and titles to come.

Immortal Studios’ Storyverse is spearheaded by the company’s Founder and CEO Peter Shiao, who is collaborating with a team of comic book storytellers to bring a modern sensibility to the Wuxia genre that has influenced contemporary pop culture, including Marvel’s Shang-Chi, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Matrix, and Star Wars, as well as countless anime and manga like Naruto. Wuxia, pronounced “woo-sha,” is a long running genre born from China that depicts the adventures and trials of martial arts heroes, often but not always in historical settings and with fantasy elements. The Immortal Studios’ Storyverse is inspired by the storytelling of one of the foremost authors in the Wuxia genre, Peter Shiao’s father Shiao Yi, whose novels have been adapted into film and television more than thirty times, including films by the Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest.

“I am very excited that with this new partnership with Dynamite, one of the preeminent comic publishers, Immortal has dramatically increased our reach and visibility to fandom,” said Shiao. “This is a very important step in our goal to build a multi-pronged distribution footprint to reach different market segments that are important for us. We look forward to sharing these Immortal stories which have already gained initial traction through our growing community to new audiences now available to us through Dynamite’s various distribution channels!”

“At Dynamite, our mission is always bringing diverse and entertaining stories to all kinds of audiences through the art forms that we love,” said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. “The relationship I’ve had with Immortal Studios’ Head of Publishing Hank Kanalz over the years has always been great, and when he presented this opportunity with Immortal Studios, and the ability to work with Peter and his team, I could not be more excited. This partnership is a natural fit with the ethos of our companies and I can’t wait for readers to dig into these stories. Whether there are kids and adults craving this kind of representation and storytelling, or someone unfamiliar about to be swept up in something magical, we’re looking forward to responses!”

Immortal Studios’ titles include:

· The Adept by writers Tasha Huo, Charlie Stickney, Alison Norrington, and Peter Shiao, artist Yishan Li, and letterer Deron Bennett. The Adept tells the deep and personal story of a young woman on a journey to master an ancient martial art that was thought to be long lost. Filled with action, transformation, and mystery, the key theme is about homecoming and redemption. Two action-packed chapters have been produced to date, featuring kidnapped pop stars, arcade brawls, and more.

· Chronicles of the Immortal Swordsman by writer Peter Shiao, artists Pop Mhan and Jheremy Raapack, colorist Rex Lokus, and letterer Deron Bennett. In this series, protagonist Phil Du escapes his struggles through parkour and online gaming. But when he’s suddenly pulled into an ancient order of supernatural warriors amidst a civil war and cataclysm, he will have to step up to his destiny.

· Fa Sheng: Origins is created by Peter Shiao, written by Rylend Grant, illustrated by Dexter Wee, colored by Omi Remalante Jr., and letterred by Deron Bennett. The tale chronicles the humble beginnings of a great Shaolin Master. The series is written by Rylend Grant, a screenwriter, author, and Ringo Award-winning comic book creator who is also an ordained Soto Zen Buddhist monk. The series is recommended for fans of films based on the story of Ip Man, including the eponymous series and The Grandmaster.

· Assassin G by writer Jen Troy and artist He Tao, featuring coloring by Hi-Fi Design and lettering by AndWorld Design. This summer Immortal Studios will launch a Kickstarter campaign for this new series, from the CW’s Supergirl TV series writer Jen Troy, about the deadly saga of vengeance between warring factions in the martial underworld in the early 1980s. The novel that inspired Assassin G by Wuxia master Shiao Yi, 19 (Gan the 19th Sister), is known as one of the preeminent IPs in the Chinese speaking world which has been adapted for television four times, and this new series will mark the story’s first comic book and English language adaptation. The Assassin G Kickstarter pre-launch page for the campaign is now live.

“We plan on continuing to use Kickstarter to crowdfund new concepts and series, including our fourth series, ASSASSIN G,” said Immortal Studios’ Head of Publishing Hank Kanalz. “Kickstarter’s platform allows us to engage with a very active reader base, and take their feedback into consideration, prior to publishing the official, final version of any given series. This publishing partnership with Dynamite allows us to expand into the direct market and bookstores. With their success with THE BOYS and so many top shelf licensed comics, Dynamite brings an expertise that will help in our mission to broaden the wuxia genre in comics to a wider audience. I am thrilled to be working with Nick and crew again.”

Immortal Studios feature a range of variant covers from the likes of Gene Ha, Jim Cheung, Ming Doyle, Gian Gulang, Joyce Chin, and more. Other talents and staff behind the curtains include former longtime DC Comics editor Brian Cunningham and team members with experience at Disney, Warner Bros., Sony, 20th Century Fox, and more.

“Heroes in the wuxia genre are often everyday people who become extraordinary not because of machines or nuclear spills, but their own spirit and initiative,” said Shiao. “Immortal carries on the legacy of the wuxia genre and my father’s work, re-introducing and calibrating these timeless concepts for a modern, global audience who are hungry to connect with stories that are empowering. It is always during times of uncertainty that Wuxia rises, and we are very honored to be carrying its flag.”

More details on release dates, format, and more will be forthcoming from Dynamite and Immortal Studios.

Bob Harras
Immortal Studios

EXCLUSIVE: Bob Harras, the former editor-in-chief of both Marvel and DC Comics, has joined Immortal Studios as editor-at-large of its senior management team.

Harras comes aboard after the fan-driven launch of the company’s four comic book titles — Adept, Assassin G, Chronicles of the Immortal Swordsmen and Fa Sheng — that serve as the foundation of its storyverse.

Immortal Studios is a transmedia, direct-to-consumer entertainment company with a focus on the ancient Chinese martial arts-fantasy genre also known as Wuxia.

At Marvel, Harras spearheaded titles such as the X-Men, Avengers, Spider-Man, Hulk and Deadpool in addition to the rest of the Marvel line. He was story consultant for the animated Fox TV series X-Men. His writing credits include the Avengers, Namor and the limited series Nick Fury vs. S.H.I.E.L.D.

At DC he oversaw editorial for comics including Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. He also headed up MAD magazine, Black Label and Vertigo publications as well as spearheading DC’s first YA and middle-grade line of publications. He is the only person to have been editor at both the Marvel and DC labels.

“As we embark on our mission to awaken heroes everywhere through the Immortal storyverse, and Wuxia is again awakening as fan/youth favorited stories, Bob Harras’ unparalleled experience shepherding story worlds for both Marvel and DC, the two most successful companies to have created cinematic universes, is helping us succeed in creating our own lane,” said Peter “Payhuan” Shiao, Immortal Studios founder and CEO and creator of the Immortal storyverse.

“Now that we have established the core pillars of our storyverse, which has brought together all the diverse influences that have existed in the big tent of Wuxia, it’s time to take these stories to the world and Bob is the perfect leader to bring legs to our current stories and to increase new ones on this foundation across all media using our dynamic tech enabled approach to build and scale communities.”

Said Harras: “I’m excited to join Immortal Studios with its bold plan to deeply engage with fans across the globe to thrill to the adventures of martial heroes confronting the challenges of modern day. I’m really looking forward to working with the incredibly talented team of artists and writers at Immortal as we tell the stories of our characters who help us discover the hero within us all.”

Added Hank Kanalz, Head of Publishing, Immortal Studios: “I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with Bob again. He brings a wealth of experience to Immortal, and I’m looking forward to building this new universe with him and the amazing creative teams we’ve assembled. Watch out – we’re just getting started.”

Since its launch in 2021, Immortal Studios has acquired exclusive media rights to the 60-plus-title library of Wuxia creator Shiao Yi with 30 Asian film and TV adaptations as the foundation for its storyverse. The company has hosted fan events including at San Diego Comic-Con.

Immortal Studios is TURNING THE PAGE ON SUPERHEROES!
We are Immortal Studios, home of the Immortal Storyverse, the first ever wuxia-centered, interconnected comic book story universe. You might remember us from our previous successful Kickstarter campaigns (5 already fulfilled) and we’re back to bring you more of the stories you love—and to make a historic imprint in the process.
“People yearn for something more than just another caped crusader fighting another inter-galactic battle. They want stories that mirror the challenges and complexities of their daily lives, characters they can relate to, and narratives that aren’t commandeered by profit-driven conglomerates trying to meet another quarterly revenue goal,” says Payhuan Shiao, founder of Immortal Studios.
This campaign isn’t just about funding the printing of comic books. We are both presenting an authentic, diverse, and grounded alternative to the superhero saturation and building an entirely new, multicultural mythology that reflects our times. It’s ambitious but, in the wake of unprecedented global challenges, it is entirely necessary. This is a campaign about deepening human connections and empowering new possibilities through inspiring, remarkable storytelling.
And we’re not just bringing you one, but four new issues of the stories you’ve already shown us that you love, building the foundation of this epic Storyverse even further and even stronger.

We have The Adept, Chronicles of the Immortal Swordsmen, Fa Sheng: Origins, and Assassin G all lined up for their next big adventures — All in one shared universe. More Kung Fu, more Asian-American culture, and more wuxia fantasy action.

Anyone who has followed us for any appreciable amount of time knows that we are in this for the long haul, but if you’re new to Immortal Studios, know that we are dedicated not only to bringing you quality stories but to creating a cultural movement that is community-driven, and mission led, at its heart.
This means we can’t do it without you. Your support is the most important ingredient to our success. Every pledge brings us closer to our goal and helps us to continue creating the stories you love and actualizing our mission in the world: to inspire and awaken the hero within all of us via stories that feature intriguing, complex, relatable heroes shaped by spirit and energy—echoing the diverse and intricate world we all inhabit.
No Kickstarter is complete without an offering of tantalizing rewards and this campaign is no different. From digital copies to exclusive prints and special edition covers, we are delivering for you because we know that these are uncertain times for so many of us. We do not take your financial support lightly and we understand that every dollar pledged is an enormous act of faith.
The journey we are inviting you on is epic, as it should be, and we want you to be a part of it. Let’s make comic book history… together.
In the Immortal Storyverse, every backer is a hero. And every hero… gets their own comic book.
Let’s do this, Immortals!

Immortal Studios Launches Kickstarter for Asian-American, Kung Fu Graphic Novels
Immortal Studios wants to bring ‘wuxia’ into the 21st century

Adan Kohnhorst
15 seconds ago 1 mins read

Immortal Studios, the production house behind recent hit graphic novel series ‘The Adept’ and ‘Assassin G,’ just dropped a Kickstarter for its next round of releases.

Immortal Studios landed in the comics scene with a bang — and a mission to bring wuxia to the world at large.

Wuxia is a genre of fiction that originated in China, melding worlds of heroism, fantasy, and martial arts. Dating all the way back to ancient stories and writings, today it’s most known through high-flying kung fu action films.

“With the phenomenal success of projects such as ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once,’ ‘Shang-Chi,’ ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender,’ and many others, wuxia is undergoing a massive resurgence,” says founder Payhuan Shiao. “But it is not without extensive cultural appropriation, and often without attribution, or respect to its source.”

“Our work is to authentically represent wuxia and bring its ancient wisdom to our modern world so that the next thousand years of this genre is still linked to its founding ideals and inspirations,” he adds. “For all these reasons and more, we are excited to turn the page on superheroes and declare a new era of martial heroes — powered by wuxia.”

The new Kickstarter will fund the next issues of four fan-favorite titles: ‘The Adept,’ ‘Chronicles of the Immortal Swordsmen,’ ‘Fa Sheng: Origins,’ and ‘Assassin G.’

All four titles take place across the same, unified ‘Immortal Storyverse,’ setting the scene for future cross-title action — and every story is driven by Asian and Asian-American characters, writers, and artists.

“People yearn for something more than just another caped crusader fighting another intergalactic battle,” says Shiao. “They want stories that mirror the challenges and complexities of their daily lives, characters they can relate to, and narratives that aren’t commandeered by profit-driven conglomerates trying to meet another quarterly revenue goal.”

The Kickstarter went live today, and backers of the project stand to receive a selection of gifts, from digital copies and exclusive prints, to special edition covers.

Benjamin Frandsen

I’ve always been a storyteller. But my professors in prison taught me how to write.
By Benjamin Frandsen

Immortal Studios’ team (from left to right): Benjamin Frandsen, Charlie Stickney, Jen Troy, Rylend Grant, Payhuan Shiao, Hank Kanalz, Gene Ching, and Tomas Jegeus. Photo courtesy of Comic-Con.
One incredibly surreal day in 2003, I was arrested by the FBI, thrown in jail, and informed that I was facing the death penalty. I remember gaping in disbelief as my court-appointed attorney tried to convince me that facing life in prison was “a safer alternative to the death penalty.”

So how does a guy whose government wanted to kill him suddenly find himself standing on the main stage at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, being introduced as the newest graphic novelist at Immortal Studios, creator of the world’s first interconnected series of martial arts fantasy comics?

What could possibly have brought me out of despair and defeat and onto such an unlikely platform to share my harrowing tale? The answer is education.

My time in prison began in 2005, after being handed two sentences of life without possibility of parole — times two. Back then, there were almost no self-help programs, and the paltry few that existed were not offered to people who were “never getting out.” What was the point? But I stubbornly refused to let my brain turn to mush by slipping into the status quo lethargy of televised sports, movies, and endless Pinochle games. Lacking access to formal college classes, I realized I desperately needed a project.

I thought back to one of my earliest memories as a creator. I was five years old. My first “movie” was about to begin. My parents beamed as the dinosaur blanket curtain opened. “And . . . action!” I chirped. I knew precisely how many Star Wars action figures it took to defeat the evening’s antagonist, my gargantuan stuffed gorilla. Though my mise-en-scene would have inspired no envy from Peter Jackson, and the applause was more loyalty than admiration, I was hooked. I had witnessed the miracle — my audience had experienced my inspired thought. I had participated in that most sacred of rituals.

I had created a moment.

“I was proud of myself for the first time in nine years”

Concept art by Immortal Studios intern Nicholas Wong.
I remember standing in my tomb of a jail cell, scouring books: Screenplay, The Writer’s Journey, The Screenwriter’s Bible, The Book of the Samurai. As homemade “scene cards” blanketed my rusty metal bunk, I started working on my own scripts.

After a year of scribbling with jailhouse golf pencils, The Canton Experiment — my original screenplay about the only Japanese samurai in China, in 1725 A.D. — was born (logline: “Remember the Titans, with swords”). Thanks to a friend/typist playing Rosetta Stone to my tiny graphite scrawl, I signed an agreement with a producer named Payhuan Shiao, which allowed him to shop our project around to try to get the film made. Three rewrites later, as I was sweating in a desert prison, he asked me to write a treatment and screenplay for what he described as “the Buddhist Avengers.”

Payhuan would later become the founder and CEO of Immortal Studios. Screenwriter and producer Matt Stuecken, known for 10 Cloverfield Lane and Knights of the Zodiac, became my story analyst. Every night, I typed into the wee hours. I’d complete a draft and FedEx it to Matt, and he’d FedEx back his notes, which were insightful and mercilessly blunt: “What is the point of this scene? Delete it.” I have never learned so much so fast.

But still, I found myself longing to find more than a mentor-by-mail who could refine my act breaks. I needed professors who could help me polish my unrefined, self-taught writing skills. With an educated mind, I could create stories that would inspire people and enrich their lives. I could create more moments.

Much as it had done for the vagabond prince, Aladdin, it was the desert that granted my wish. I was finally admitted into the associate’s program at Palo Verde College in Blythe. Though at first, I was limited to taking distance-learning classes, the one-on-one feedback professors gave me deepened my understanding of the material and increased my thirst for learning. There, I earned three associate’s degrees. As I held them in my hand, I ran my thumb across the gold embossed seal, and for the first time since my arrest nine years earlier, I was proud of myself.

“UCLA has always been a part of my story”

Benjamin Frandsen with his fellow UCLA English majors. Photo courtesy Benjamin Frandsen.
After a transfer to a lower-security prison, I continued my studies via correspondence, earning new degrees in American studies and business. This put me at the top of the list when Merced College finally brought in-person classes inside the prison walls. This was the most significant boost yet to my academic mindset. I was no longer taking whatever classes were offered; I was studying English and working with teachers who were themselves skilled scribes. The critiques and suggestions of my professors had a profound effect on my writing. I gained the confidence to submit my work and watched as it found its way into the pages of publications around the country. In 2021, I graduated from Merced College and became the first incarcerated student to be selected as Outstanding English Student of the Year. I was also in the first cohort of Fresno State University’s in-person college program at Valley State Prison.

I transferred, almost directly, from prison to UCLA in June 2022, after I paroled from Valley State at the age of 48. UCLA has always been part of my story. In 1974, I was born at UCLA Hospital. Having earned my first college units in prison classrooms surrounded by barbed wire and cinder blocks, it is difficult to overstate how much it meant for me to be admitted into the hallowed halls of this institution, with its Gothic-spired buildings standing proudly in their red-bricked majesty.

My first ever social media post about the experience soon received over 1 million views. The editor of UCLA Magazine called and soon I — the same guy who had ditched high school more times than he had attended and whose most recent photo was a prison mugshot — was staring at his face on the cover of a magazine. In the two years since my release, my show called the Ben Free Podcast has just completed its fifth season and my nonprofit, the Ben Free Project, is already visiting prisons to provide educational programs to improve literacy rates inside.

So how did I end up on that stage at Comic-Con? My mentors at Immortal Studios asked me to write their next graphic novel series based loosely on my own criminal justice experience. For Immortal, this would be the story of a wrongfully convicted man who finds his awakening as a hero in a very dark place. Soon I will be paired with an artist, and we will find out if my artistic vision is a match with his or hers. The first issue of my graphic novel will likely be published in mid-2025.

Earlier this month, the man who had begun his academic journey locked behind bars took the proud walk of “Pomp and Circumstance” and became a proud Bruin alumnus. My beloved red-brick buildings and sprawling green lawns at UCLA are already becoming mindscapes of nostalgia instead of landmarks on the way to class.

My freedom was taken away from me. Like the protagonist in my graphic novel, I was relegated to a solitary corner of a dungeon, without direction or purpose or hope. All that changed when I signed up for college and opened my first textbook. In April, I was accepted into San Diego State’s highly selective, 3-year MFA creative writing program focusing on crafting fiction, writing memoir, publishing, and instructing. I also just found out that soon, I’ll be in front of a classroom, teaching first-year students of my own. After all, if my education could become the guide that would lead me from the dark corridors of prison to the red-bricked hallowed halls of UCLA to the stage at Comic-Con, it could do the same for anyone.

Benjamin Frandsen is the formerly incarcerated founder and executive director of the Ben Free Project. He’s an honorably discharged military veteran and a published poet, writer, and memoirist. He recently graduated from UCLA with a BA in English and is currently studying for his MFA in creative writing at San Diego State University.

Nice piece from Benjamin.
