How many times to you hit your wallbag?

Come guys, what’s the info? What strikes do you train? How much do you hit it? 50 times a day? Or 10,000.

And, of all the cool kung fu training devices, which is your favorite? I swear I’ve seen the coolest stuff on old school kung fu movies. Strange contraptions made of logs that you jump around on (i’m not talking about plum blossom poles), some have moving parts that trap your legs if you mess up. Other’s have spikes to stab you if you fall down. One guy had a log hanging from a tree, and he would punch and kick it. What a badass!

Ok, I’m bored. Later guys

Iron

Practice for what you need

Hello,

If you are training to fight then you would need to punch the wallbag more than if you are just training for slef-defense and the art.

It is usually a good rule of thumb to perform about 1/3 of your total punches against the wallbag. So, using this formula if you punch 1000 times you would want to do between 300-330 punches against the wallbag. Of course the more the merrier.

Peace,

Dave

What’s a good amount to start with? like 20 a day and work up? adding 10 per day or something?

Thanks,

Iron

When i firs started with a wall bag i did about 50 but now i try to do a lot more. I punch at different distances from the wall, its really improved my 1" punches.

punching the bag

I try to punch the bag every day! The first thing I make sure is that I use the proper technique and energy. I start by hitting the bag while in the triangle stance 100x. I then move on to all the basic stances and punch the bag 100x for each stance. A total of 700. I then finish it off by punching the air 400x to elongate the muscles in my arm. 200 face level and 200 chest level. I find hitting the bag a great way to condition my fist so that if I have t0 punch someone in the face my fist can withstand the impact and not crumble. I don’t use any type of dit da jow.

no jow eh? are your hands visibly different as a result of your training now?

Iron

What does the wing chun punch do for your muscles

IronFist I don’t use any type of dit da jow either and my hands are fine.

Martial Joe Doing just about anything exercises your muscles, a wing chun punch just means you cand punch well.

punching the bag

By hitting the bag for over a year callous has developed over my knuckles. My hand doesn’t look bad at all only a martial artist would notice that I’m constantly hitting something with my hands. I don’t use jow because I don’t know much about the side effects that some herbs in the jow might have. It’s hard to know what your’e getting in the jow. Plus I don’t think I need it. Maybe someone will convince me that I do?

I don’t use my full range of motion when I hit the bag therefore when I finish I punch in the air. Punching in the air stretches the muscles in your arm. I don’t really elongate the muscles. By fully extending my punches in the air I use and maintain my available full range of motion. It also helps develop muscle memory besides other important things.

until my knuckles bruise.

Currently I do not use a wall bag.

I am currently striking either air or a hanging pillow case. All punches are verticle punches in a series of three: 2 regular (elbow bent) and one hip (fully extended - but not hyperextended).

As for how many - I do not and have not counted at this time. I currently do three sets for two minutes with one minute rest in between, punching non-stop. My current goal is to get to three sets of five minutes with thirty seconds between each.

the fabric of my bag is kinda harsh - i just rip the skin off if i do too many. Is this on purpose to roughten the skin there? Or do i need jow? I use it a lot, but i wear my weightlifting gloves to stop my skin from coming off…

All i wanted was some RICE CAKES! Now? WE MUST BATTLE.

Your problem does not lie in the bag. It lies in the way you punch. Basically, the alignment of your punch is wrong.

This isnt the JKD list-is it?I am amazed at what I am reading about bag punching. Some of you are asking for future joint
troubles. A wall bag is NOT for power development..
correct air punching helps with that. A wall bag is for double checking on proper bone alignment and
toughening the hand. Ergo, dont use too much power,
dont tighten muscles and use good jow before and after.Good wing chun kung fu is about learning how to release the power that is developed from proper alignment with minimal long run damage to oneself.

Sharky…your scraping(sliding across the bag instead of going totaly into it)…
If you do that hard enough it can be like rubbing sand paper on your fist…

I don’t have a wall bag, i punch my mook jung and shadow box.

Do you find theres many benefits in punching your mook jung, can you punch with full force. I tried it a few times when using a dummy and i could only punch a few times before my hand hrt a lot so i went back to using a wall bag and pads etc

Wall Bag

Usually, I go through a counting set
singles 1 to 10, Doubles 1 to ten up to 5’s 1 to ten. this is for 150 punches. This is repeated 3 times.

Distance I work from is enough to give penetration into the bag, without hyperextending the elbow.

A good jow helps in the initial conditioning.

How do you fellas fill your wall bag ?

I have 2: 1 filled with dried beans, 1 with fine dry sand (luckily I live on about 2 mins walk from the beach and have an inexhaustable supply  )

Also like to work on Jik Jeung and other palm strikes on the bag.

‘wing chun men do it with sticky hands’

I hit the sandbag 1-2 times per second, for 30 to 90 minutes, i.e. 1800 to 10800 times per session. Mostly straight punches, with some palms and forearms thrown in for variety. I do it approximately once a week.
