I recently began private Wing Chun lessons with an excellent Sifu and i found i progressed very quickly as i trained at home every night aswell, I have had to move towns due to relocation with my job, this new town is very small and i have spent the last month searching for schools but have found absolutely nothing, infact there is no Kung Fu schools in this town for sure, as you would expect there is plenty of Karate, Taekwondo and Kickboxing available, but thats not me, I was hoping that if I couldn’t find a Wing Chun school then there would be another style of Kung Fu school but there isn’t.
I know you can’t beat the advice of a good SiFu but is there anything anybody could recommend that would enable me to continue my Wing Chun study? i.e. websites, books etc, is it possible to learn this way?
I feel i will be forced to take up Taekwondo or something just to keep training in a martial art.
the town is Derby in the UK but i can only travel sort of up to 10 miles, i have heard rumours that there is a class held in the Alvaston area but i can find nothing on this…
If there is no way you can continue with your sifu. (not even like once a month?) just keep practicing the wing chun you do know. just get really good at it. and try to strike up some friendships with the other martial arts schools around and maybe do some friendly sparring to keep you sharp. sparring other styles can be very benificial. If you want to go the video route I suggest wong shun leung videos. I thought those were good. with my suggestion to sparr I must also give a caution, make sure it is friendly, set up rules before hand (know kicking to the knees, contact, etc), and stick to practicing your wing chun even if it doesn’t work at first cause it just takes time. so good luck.
thanks for the advice wingchunalex I think i will go to a couple of the martial arts schools in town be it karate or whatever just to get the opportunity to spar and get advice from other martial artists, its dissapointing there isn’t any SiFus around here but i’ll get some videos (thanks for the recommendation) and that should keep me going. You might be able to train some of your own partners, conveying your skills to them so that you have chi sao partners.
Try printing up some flyers asking for anyone interested to contact you, and do find some way to stay in regular contact with a good, reliable Wing Chun teacher. I’d avoid visiting karate schools or other martial arts schools.
