Grinding sound in knee

I’ve been experiencing some strange knee symptoms lately. Ironically it occured while doing tai chi.

My left knee makes a bad grinding sound. Kind of like rice krispies.

Is it cartilage? Maybe just fluid moving around?

Any help is appreciated.

Not sure what it is.

Hope you didn’t get “Tai Chi Knee”.
:frowning: :frowning:

Cheers.

What exactly is Tai Chi Knee? I’ve heard that term before. It has something to do with twisting the knee while the foot stays planted or something, right?

IronFist

IF.

It is actually an incorrect term.

“Tai Chi Knee” happens due to improper practice of Tai Chi stances.

There are 2 major causes for it:
1.) Knee going forward beyond the toes.
2.) letting the knee fall inward of the foot during stances.

Both should not occur if you got a good Instructor or train correctly.

Cheers.

I just tried it out and I think my knees are going beyond my toes a LITTLE bit. But it seemed to minimize the stress on the joint. I’m thinking it may be from some other things as well.

Does it go away?

Whats wrong with the knee going foward beyond the toes?
I regularily do this when in my stances, and have no problems.
Isent it just a sign that youhave flexible ankles and can sink into your stance?

My doctor says if there is no pain, not to worry. My knees “crackle” when I do squats or low stances, but there is no pain involved so he says it’s OK.

I also have experienced popping in my hips, shoulders, and wrists…

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but most popping sounds are either caused by tendons dragging across a bone, or by the release of pressurized gas built up in the joint. Both are harmless.

And as far as I know, putting your knee over your foot causes extra stress on the knee. My sifu says you should always be able to see your toes.

I don’t hear popping so much as “stepping on rice krispies”. It’s a grinding sound rather than just air in the joints.

My legs and knees are always a little sore from training a lot. I wonder if icing it would help?
