I apologize first of all to all of our moderators who do a fine job moderating our board. I also understand if you feel this needs to be taken off, but I need to get this off my chest…I know you guys are as liberal as can be, here is why…

I come to this forum to talk, to discuss, to get different view points on the one subject that is my real passion, Wing Chun. Generally I find some real pearls of wisdom from a few people, and every once and a while, from those that dont seem to have theknowledge or ability to really share. I even find that I learn a lot from the nebies who just get on the board, have just started practicing Wing Chun, and have a real desire to learn.
Why is it that I have to wade through cute little vague remarks designed to make one look like an intellect and a deep thinker? Most are about as deep as the thoughts from Jack Handy,and around the same level of maturity.
Apparently Whipping Hand has served as a bad example, and is still serving, and now he has a small following of people who believe that by not imparting knowledge or by making me “think” by making these sometimes witty, but most often useless comments.
Is it really necessary? I think a little bit of humor is fine and a light thread or two is fine as well, but not a thread goes through the Wing Chun forum that isnt a$$-aulted by these people. It was amusing the first few thousand times, now going around challenging everyone elses beliefs, sitting on the highest mountain you can find, and making it seem as though you own the ‘secret’ to wing chun and therefore deserve to be vague and allusive.
Its not mysterious to me. I dont see any of it as deep knowledge, I do not believe in deep knowledge, any knowledge we gain in wing chun can be found through practice and trial and error. Sometimes we need to discuss these ideals to help us work them through. That is what some of us are here for.
I love wing chun, When I married I told my wife that if she was to marry me, she had to share me with the martial arts. I come here to hopefully meet people who share the same passion and desire to learn, and to grow.
I have met only one person on this forum personally, and can say he posesses good Kung fu. the rest of you I have not. some of you have great knowledge, you have applied your self to the academic study of the art and arts, and whether your knowledge is 100% scorrect is unimportant so much as you have been willing to shre it openly.
A few of you have credentials I have seen or heard from directly to back up your ability. The rest of you will not impress me with your ability to sound like you know what you are talking about, it is nothing to hang on this forum for some time and pick up a few things here and there, mix it with 1 part vagueness, 1 part pridefulness, and you have a dangerous and disruptive mix.

I seriously hope you are not requesting even more “moderation” of this board. Appreciate the good discussion, ignore the remainder; or leave the whole of it for the rest of us to enjoy.

BTW, you may have met more than one of us in person. :slight_smile:

No, I am not requesting more moderation at all. I am just getting something off my chest. I get alot from some of the people onthis board, it is a good sounding board for ideas. As with any internet forum or listserv, you have to wade through the crap to get to the good stuff, it just sems that as of late there is much more crap!

Well Red, I am very passionate about Wing Chun as well. However I choose who I impart my knowledge also. the reason being is that it is very hard to read someones heart on the forum, but If we were to meet, I am a very sharing Sifu.

Roy, It is good to hear this. I understand your trepidation about communicating on the internet. That is really what my post comes down to. To communicate to a few open, honest and sharing people, I have to wade through the others.

i feel the same way:D i love kung fu. i love anything that has to do with kung fu or the martial arts period. i have loved this since i was 3 years old( no lie). the people in my immediate life dont share quite the same passion i do. and its not easy to get together with other classmates, although i am working on it. most of you have so many great things to share and i come here to share my passion with you, who feel the same as i. most of you offer so much to our art. i am getting a feeling for who this applies to and who it does not. i look forward every day to the insight and inspiration that you can provide. when i go through the posts i want to train even harder. i hope to sometime have the honor to meet some of you in person. maybe even cross hands with ya, because i know that you have something to offer.
i both honor and respect you.

Perhaps they are deep thinkers and intellectuals… Does it hurt you that much? Do you dislike Wing Chun so much that you cannot bear the investigation?

Perhaps you should look to yourself for the answer to your dilemma, not to the forum…

After reading this topic I see the same trend as on the rest of the board. There are those who don’t mind reading vague and in some cases less than useful posts, and those who do.

I figured I’d give my opinion, big surprise huh :smiley:

This forum is the domain of the members. I believe that most come here to discuss the art of Wing Chun. One can do this in many different ways. Vague posts are not necessarily the problem. I see the problem more as posts, vague or not, which are designed to make someone else look less intelligent or knowledgeable, usually in a spiteful or insulting manner. Posting dispersion on someones lineage or Sifu and taking potshots without really answering any quesitons with a substanitive reply.

No matter what one does there will be those who are not happy. So what do we do? Do we have a moderatorless forum like some out there or do we tighten it up even more? No matter which way one goes someone will be unhappy. I feel, of course I am biased, that we try to reach a happy medium here. Doubtless there are those who think I may be heavy handed and uneven in my “moderation”. Just, as I hope anyhow, there are those who feel I do a fair job. I guess this is the key; to be fair. Am I always fair? Probably not. Why? Because no matter how hard I may try, or not try, I am still a human being. While I may believe that I am fair it is possible that I make a mistake. If and when I do there are plenty that will bring it to my attention, or so I have found :smiley:

Most of us live in countries of laws. In most cases there are laws we may not agree with. Still, they exist for the benefit of the rest of society. Most “civilized” social groups have put some type of “moderation” in place. This can take the form of police and the courts or legal system. While that “system” may strive to be fair there are doubtless many who will not be happy with the results. In some cases those unhappy are so because they wish to work outside of the boundaries of what the rest of society, the majority, has deemed acceptable. On this board we have rules. They are pretty simple and clearly stated for those that wish to check them out.

Simply stated, treat one another with courtesy and respect. Refrain from posting insulting and inflamatory posts or topics. Discuss the art rather than one anothers personal defects, or percieved defects. If one steps outside of these boundaries then, like most other places, there are reactions and things in place to maintain or bring balance back. One of those is moderation. On this board, you have the option of voicing your opinion and contacting a moderator directly via e-mail or private message. You can also contact the Administrators of this forum if you are unhappy with anything, including moderation.

While one may indeed look elsewhere for the answers and we all need to make our own decisions. There is no reason one can not seek the answers on this board. It is after all a discussion board.

Maybe some aren’t willing to just hand it out on a silver platter. The few higher ups that do share the goods usually get flamed by all the juniors. The juniors are always willing to share.

Sihing 73, I think you guys are doing a fine job, you cant please all the people all of the time. And I agree, we should try more often to not be inflammatory.

Sunkuen, My issue is not the willingness or unwilingness to share. If you are uncomfortable with sharing knowledge, then first and foremost I do not understand why you would be here in this place. But I share my knowledge on this forum knowing that first and foremost it is my opinion on what I have found successful, and second, that there will be people who will disagree, for some of those, they can do so respectfully and we can debate to several conclusions. In any conclusion we come to we have learned something.
There are many reasons not to share, but like I said, then why bother being here? Regardless my complaint was not about that but about the useless drivel that comes out of some mouths designed to as Sihing put it, make others look stupid, and also to make themselves seem smarter, for vague comments are often times used when a lack of knowledge or understanding is present.

Alpha dog mentioned on one thread that he feels people should go to other sources the here to find the answers they seek. I disagree, obviously because I am here. My questions are always first given to my instructors, as they are the best most obvious place to get answers that I can apply with my practice. But I am not mindless and do not accept everything on faith. What may work for one may not work for another and on an don with many other cliche sayings all eluding to the fact that we should think for ourselves, determine what is right for us. In the past, especially in china for so long, this information was not easy to come by, and so you had no choice but to listen to the one or two sources you had. Later you could hopefully break free of your fetters and begin to study for yourself. Now we have the information highway, and to not use it would be a shame.
I would have to say that most of the information I get from here is useless, to me. Not to say it isnt useless, but that it is not applicable to my specific way of studying or whatever variable that is pertinent. But I have on occasion walked away with some very valuable jewels of knowledge, some have helped me to advance in leaps and bounds, some have helped me to advance in baby steps, either way they have been a contribution from people I wouldnt have been able to talk to 100 years ago.
That is the point of being here, and although I am willing to get through the trash talkers, trolls, and idiots who seem to permeate this medium as virtual tough guys or virtual smart guys, it at times over reaches my tolerance for idiocy, and I must expel it.
As any other sane person would do, I skip over the drivel, and move on to the good stuff. Could I be missing something? Probably, but is it worth my time to sift through mountains of garbage to find the needle of enlightenment? Not in my opinion. And that seems to be what we lately have been experiencing on the wing Chun board, a trend to add to the mountain of growing unintelligible garbage that is always present. A deluge of questionable posts, most uttered in unintelligible riddles elluding some pearl of wisdom the speaker may or may not have.
Sometimes not saying anything at all is more a sign of intelligence then speaking. My guess is that these same people would look at the number of post as a sign of a persons status, but those can sometimes be decieving…

The World of Wing Chun is not a mystical place, we dont have any secret techniques, or off the wall chinese secrets that would improve your wing chun a thousand fold or make you unstoppabe. As with all things, a little research and a little practice and anything is attainable.

Sunkuen, if I have not made it clear, I respect that you may not wish to share your knowledge with newbies or others. that is your perogitive. As I told Roy, who mentioned he is a very nice guy and more then willing to open up in person, I can uinderstand why you would feel that way.

With respect to (A), look at the volumes you’ve already written on this subject and ask yourself if others don’t feel the same way.

With respect to (B), I couldn’t agree more, especially in light of the mountain of garbage I just paired down.

Wow, Alpha Dog, I had seen some intelligent stuff from you, but I must now use you as the example to highlight my thread.
If you were to do s sort of your stuff AD, you would find one or two good statements but a lot of elusive talk, and inane banter. I do however apologize for 'making you read through my entire thread on this, but you as well as a few others, should.
I am sorry your feelings were hurt, it is the only way to explain the small attack you have made. As I learned in the military, small attacks come from small places and are usually feints trying to draw away from a bigger picture, or the truth of situation.
I apologize if I have offended you but you and a few others, and your attempts to look virtually intelligent have disturbed me as I had mistaken you for someone worth talking to, if you could be got to talk intelligibly.
The next time you are in minnesota feel free to give me call and we can play chess, or tell stories, or talk philosophy, or something else you might consider worthy of your aptitude, as Wing Chun apparently does not cut it.
