quote:
But this is a cowardly argument to come from warriors. If your style dies with your generation, it is your fault. You cannot blame others for not passing down your tradition. [/quote]

Gene please tell me you didn’t write this.Communism made kung fu illegal, killing kung fu practtioners, sendind them to jail where some commited suicide and as a result many had to flee, destroying part of their culture forever and you guys dare write this?It is a total slap on the face to the ones who had to deal with so much pain and oppresion. Also to the one’s who try to strive to preserve what they have the best way they can.

I never stated I hated wu shu I just hate how the PRC promotes wu shu as the original art.I saw a documentation that was made in China and it said that kung fu is considered a bastard art to wu shu.Didn’t the red guard also attack shaolin temple? In consequence shaolin monks were made to go out of secular life and were force to get married to women or die?

What are you guys trying to do?

I’m sorry to be rude but that was a ver offensive statement.

“Always be ready”

gene why u guys turning this into etiqute on good writing

i just picked up the new issue
im going to look at the next section of the lohan form,i think in 99 you guys printed an article on shawn liu showing the 18 lohan form..

in my lohan book there are about 23 classical names and it says the set has the original damo 18??? plus a few added by his teacher pointing out its a revised set.

i’l write all the names out.

nmantis i think u took that out of context

as a bhuddist i dont think that is what gene was implying.

i do have a couple inquirys for your opinion gene..

i like your analogy how china is similar to the old west ,with mayors as warlords with thier clicks…or something like that.

i saw on the bbc three hours ago something about tibetan bhuddists in china and the head abbott beacame disgruntled? and fled to the states
then the chinese government apointed new head monks;they told the euro-reporters they could ask any?.they asked something political i couldnt hear but thats not the point.after the question
it was anounced the interview is over…

then it went on about the chinese communist economical machine rolling thru china-or something like that…

one thing that erked me was the tibetan districts
in china"““resettlement areas??””
are tourist destinations for the chinese to go look at the tibetan culture wich the reporter described as tourists view as quiant& colorfull…

he also interview some monks on the street who said they were ordered by the po-po not to speak, then the monk saod we have to be cautioes
for undercover officers-he then gave an interview…

at face value it harks of 50s american politicalism the whole reefer madness of out with the commies…but in my eye chinas a big place…and you get alot of wing chun schools in the mainland and your guys feature months ago with the bakmei/dragon master and his son, with my limited knowledge they look like good kf..

so china and performance wushu isnt that cut&dry..

to me shaolin fighting-monk is one who has renounced his worldy day2days and puts all his time in training
now it can be conjectured or doubted the higher states of sence that indivual gaint from his worldview based from his theosophy..but imo thats why shaolin legends would be so big in the history of alot of chinese culture…

if u were to meet this indiviual in battle it would be similar to fighting a tiger since he trusts in reincarnation and only moves for the right of whats just…

compared to an average scholar MA who would only think about getting out of the situation

then zen just abit more hyper not wild just theres more put into it..gene my thought would you like to add your view of the differance between a monk warrior and an average practitioner.

i meen if you take out all the legends etc

and you could do a study on a bhudda boxer you would most likly find altered bio rhythms and alchemized substances such as adrenaline finetuned with the sense of one with the environment.

what gets me tho is the chinese will let real monks live in thier society but they wont let them do interviews???

ANY IDEAS ON THAT ONE

EXCUSE THE TYPOS THIS IS NOT MY COMPUTER AND THE KEYBOARD LETTERS ARE ALMOST ALL BUT MISSING SO ITS HARD FOR I TO TYPE…

also i think i see why that 18-172 was kinda a unknown ?

what i met is was there like 18 fighting applications to lohan or 18 motion drills with magnitudes of application within each change and pose of each posture.

have togo no time to edit…PEACE

damn its hard to type on this

yeah each lines a thought so please pay consideration to the whole peace

theres three questions? the end of each banter

a lil edit

at face value it harks of 50s american politicalism the whole reefer madness of out with the commies…but in my eye chinas a big place…and you get alot of wing chun schools in the mainland and your guys feature months ago with the bakmei/dragon master and his son, with my limited knowledge they look like good kf..

what i meant by that was i tryed to understand the story unbiased and when i really lookt at the reporters report it gave me the impression he wrote that not to help bhuddism persae but he prolly viewed that as a sensational story…

like you see on this board alot “AWTHOSE GADDAN COMMIES”"

isnt there more to it tho from what i get you cant say the chinese red is worse then the america red, white&blu

wasnt mao just a po-farmboy who wanted to save his nation and rounded up the peasants and youth to get rid of the warlords and the gwy-lo

then like most partys greed set in…now if one looks at what the purpose of communism was then you look at the restrictions placed on the people but also see the gold-rings on the local magistrates,1 would see organized crime not commie prohibitions…just like the good ol us of a…its just the states covers up holding lessers down and the commies are up front your restrictions are known from birth.

is that somewhat close,there gene

could you give me your view on present day china.

My uneducated opinion…

I would just like to say that the diference between US government & Chinese government is checks and balances. We have them, China doesn’t. In China the government is going to change much more drasticly when ever there’s a change in leadership. The government has unlimited power. Here it takes forever to make major changes in laws.

I also laugh everytime I hear these big conspiracy theories about how modern wushu was created to destroy the traditional arts. Here’s what I’ve gathered about modern wushu from both my teacher(who teaches both modern & trad.) and my friend’s old teacher(who I think wouldn’t be caught dead doing modern longfist) and a couple other sources: Basically there was a lot of good stuff in modern wushu when it was first created, but the cultural revolution really stripped it of alot of it’s fighting application. Recently sense the end of that mess there’s been an effort to reintroduce fighting to modern wushu, but overall it still hasn’t fully recovered. Allthough, personally, a lot of trad. styles I’ve seen have similar problems, though for different reasons.

northen mantis: Did you have to post this everywhere? Once is enough and I am addressing it on the main thread you posted on this forum.

brad: The USA may have checks and balances, but does China have hanging chad?

diego: You typing from the white house? Missing w’s on the keyboard?

“Always be ready”

HEHE theres nothing wrong with my _hit

i wed in one of your posts, you tryed to get somewhere in 99 a article on the 5animals??..
somebody elses post said the general consensus of what is known to probably have been created in the shaolin temple is the 5animal style and the lohan.

i could see how the 5animal would make a complete method, through each animals characteristics.

my question on the 18-172 seems a simple enough one,is thier info im missing??

the relatable methods in my style to this inquiry is dragon, tiger, snake & crane
and we have the 5 element fist techniques"how complete i dont know’‘’'im in process of figuring out the terms and descriptions;classical

“The USA may have checks and balances, but does China have hanging chad?”

Almost right, it was hanging chang, but they cut him down in preparation for the Nixon visit. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry, my warped sense of humor couldn’t resist.

I understand that you want to keep this from becoming a China or US bashing thread; but responding with attacks against the US is only going to extend it. I don’t want it to become such a thread either. I just thought I’d clear that up before it becomes a war.

Seeing as how my family has served this country for 3 generations now, I also feel compelled to state that no matter what ugly policies big business and small minds manage to pass in the US; the US & the American people have always tried to fix these ugly policies and atone for them once we know better. I’ve also gotta state that if the arrows weren’t blatant enough on that voting ballot, then those people had no business deciding the next head of this country. I’ve seen those ballots and my 10 year old brother had no problem figuring them out. Alas, I am probably guilty of ageism, or some other -ism; as age and mental integrity are not requisites for voting. PC policy makes me sick, but I’m sure as he!! happy to have the freedom to express my opinion.

Just some thoughts from an ignoramus.

northern mantis: You got my attention

diego: I’m sorry, your question still isn’t narrow enough for me to address. What are you looking for - in one sentence or less?

lost_disciple: Don’t get me wrong, I love the US and my US passport, or I would have left for some other place, like Costa Rica. I suppose my chad comment to diffuse the China bashing - to point out that it’s easy to bash any country when you focus on the negative. No country is perfect and even if one was the best, the whole world couldn’t fit into it. Especially after spending time travelling in the 3rd world, I’m happy to be a US citizen. But as a citizen of the world, I can’t deny the world perspective.

Cool to see you know where I’m coming from. I didn’t mean to imply that u didn’t love the US either; just that your rebuff to that comment coulda started a war. hehe I only said all that pro-US stuff cuz I love this place so much. Though, I’d love it a LOT more if NSA would finally let me know whether or not I’m hired. :stuck_out_tongue:

I gotta let you know that I respect the he!! out of you. I really enjoy your writting style, it’s intelligent and insightful. You’ve given us a heck of a role model as a traditionalist who’s learned to embrace the more modern stuff for it’s virtues.

Regardless of the sins of China’s government, I really don’t think the modern practisioners are really hateful, murderous, spiteful people. People accuse them of saying that traditonal is messy or sloppy. My response to that is that modern wushu & mainland martial arts in general; have been treated with a lot of ill feelings from the traditional crowd. I think modern and traditional practisioners have some similar goals. They also each have a lot they are bringing to the table. Eventually they’re going to have to learn to live in harmony with each other, as I don’t see either side “winning”. The modernists want the heritage, health benefits, and the fighting ability of the traditional arts. The traditionalists (whether they want it or not) could use the flood of money, practisioners, and exposure that go along with the modernists. I think both agree that they love CMA. If each side embraced each other, they’d both probably find a mutually acceptable middle ground.

Yes, some modernists may prefer san da training alone for its fighting (techniques with no forms, tradition, or heritage). Yes, some traditionalists prefer a few high quality students to having a huge student body of hobbyists. Yes, some modernists and some traditionalists may never accept each other- especially their tao lu. Unfortunately I think these are some really narrow-minded view points. People have become better san da fighters by embracing some traditional techniques. In Taiwan, many traditional arts were made more public, and these arts have thrived- the higher number of students providing a higher number of quality students. On both sides, there are schools that have embraced the other side’s forms, and maintained their perspective integrity, often improving.

Modern’s never gonna go away. Traditional’s never going to go away. All either can hope for is a positive impact on the other; and to find a middle ground where both can meet and be happy. That’s just my thoughts.

I’d also like to see Traditional get promoted & get a lot more exposure. Laying low and keeping secrets may have been necessary a long time ago, I just don’t see the need for it these days. Unfortunately, egos, squabbles, and conflicts usually destroy proper promotion of TCMA. People never seem to agree as soon as things get too big. Goals get warped. Greed grows with money. People forget that they can make a positive difference. I think it’s sad. I think a ton of frauds make tons of money (www.kungfula.com) and get some dedicated (albeit ignorant) students because they fill a vaccuum in proper marketing and promotion of martial arts. Frauds are bad for kung fu. They hurt the art, by giving prospective students a poor impression. I consider promotion a necessary evil; but at the same time I think it could really help the arts. Organizations like AAU, USKF, USWKF, and such have come close but all are plagued with in-fighting. People may be afraid of unifying and forming a governing body, however without one, frauds are running rampant and doing more harm than modern wushu could ever hope to. I’d like to see somebody get it right; maybe as a result of modern influence.

Sorry for this long rant. Some people may not agree with anything I’ve written, but it’s how I feel. I see a reconciliation between traditionalists and modernists coming in the eventual future. I see both influencing the other in a positive way. I also see someone finally figuring out how to organize a good governing body and properly promote kung fu

Just some thoughts from an ignoramus.
