Follow up on military martial arts

I met with my marine friend yesterday. He had some pretty interesting stuff… He was telling me about pressure points and things I didn’t think they would get into. As for the techniques, it seemed to me like a mix of shuai jiao, chin na and boxing. They also do body hardening drills, which were similar to things we did in muay thai and they also have forms of sorts - pre arranged techniques in the use of the rifle and bayonet.

How long had he trained in the military?
sounds interesting..

hmmmm, what does he do in the marine corp? I wa sin for four years and other the basic hand to hand combat techniques, we didnt get really invovled. the idea is that hand to hand combat is best left ofr a desperate situation and not encouraged! A well placed bullet can do more damage, quicker then a fist.

One of them is infantry. The one I met with last night, just got out of boot camp, but was telling me about his drill instructor, who’s been training in MA for 15 years. I agree, they still focus more on gunplay, but I guess this is all in an attempt to become more well rounded soldiers. He said you can’t graduate from boot camp unless you meet all of the tan belt requirements and pass the test. Afterwards, you have the opportunity to continue training, if you wish.

Sounds like Boot to me! They teach you a little of eveyrthing, a real cram session, but a lot of it is restraining techniques, not, as you would think, killing techniques. As for toughening, well, if you do the 12 weeks, I guarentee you will come out tougher then before, if not physically then mentally.

Hey Red5Angel the Marine Corps is adopting a mixed martial arts training system that you can earn belts on that was implemented by our new comandant. In boot they started implementing it but it was just beginning when I went through. They were using some type of grappling and pressure points. Now you get issued tan belts after boot. In Officer Candidates School this summer they had already started the belt system and the instructors wear them. It is pretty fun to learn and when you train for it it is a lot more physical then the line training. I receive the tan belt the next time I go. Hey red5angel they wear the belts like they wear the rigger belts on their cammies. And the Marine he talked to was a straight boot. Hey red5angel they even changed the bayanet training to shorter type of blows with the m16a2. I liked the old better. Just my .02.

just making a reply because the “Last post” sign where it says “JOHNNY@MARTIALARTSMART.COM” is ****ing up the index.

MAKE YOUR NAME SHORTER GAWD ****IT

how did some guy none of us have heard of, has 16 posts on the new forum, has a stupidly long name which advertises another site, and ruins this one as it messes everyones screen up, and is generally a bit wierd, get to be a mod?

It seems the world is full of injustice.

I once again nominate Sharky for moderator/MC of KF Magazine’s “Velvet Lounge Forum”.

I don’t dig the new guy either, he seems to have some sort of agenda, the best moderator for that forum in my opinion would of been Jerry Love.

The guy always has a clear head and his posts have some real merit.

all in all, it seems like pretty good stuff. Of course, you have to train hard to be proficient in it, as with anything else, and the training combined with the mindset they instill in them can make an excellent fighter.

the system is called MACMAP - MArine Core Martial Arts Program, I assume, I didn’t ask him.

Edit: I just did a search and found this:

“hmm…sounds suspisciously like kung fu”

You’re right!!!
#5 TEACH MARINES HOW TO PICK OUT COLORFUL SILK COSTUMES AND FLOPPY WEAPONS.

but number 10 was interesting. HOW TO FLY AND WALK ON THE TOPS OF TREES.

Hey Thanks Johnny! When I went through it was just your basic combat system. It had some hint of martial arts in it but nothing real formal. I would have killed (no pun inteneded) for this when I was in the Corp! that was my biggest beef with our training, not enough in that area! Of course packing a sidearm, a fully automatice weapon, and a plethora of grenades helped make me feel better!

They even get into discussing martial societies of history!!!

Looks like a pretty well rounded system. Cool. This definately blows away the older stuff they were teaching from the sounds of it. Why didn’t they have have this when I was in the Marines?

My name???
