Curious…are you learning wushu? Is it that you want to learn this kick for fighting or because it looks cool?
You will need to have a supple torso, and flexible legs will definitely help. You will also benefit from jumping exercises as well. It’s all about timing the press, torso lift, and leg lift. BTW…it doesn’t work as a fighting manuver.
Good luck!
… That being said (and I agree, it don’t work well in fighting) the butterfly kick is pretty easy to learn. The most important part, imo, is not being afraid of it. If you are the type of person who doesn’t mind falling on your face the first few times, anyway…
It’s kind of like forward hand springs. If you are afraid, you are going to land on your spotter. If you are not, you are going to land on your face.
I found that working spinning cresent kicks to be the best place to start. Once you get the timming down just perfectly, add a jump. Then do a double spinning cresect with the jump. From there, you just throw the follow leg up just as your lead leg gets to the top of its arch. To add a bit, torq your hips just after throwing up your follow leg. This will create an interesting spiral. And will cause you to plow face fisrt into the ground the first time or two, so make sure you use the thick mats. ![]()
