Different forms, Same name

I’ve seen videos on the net of various Chen style forms. But some were different even though they had the same name. For example, the Xin Jia Yi Lu at this site: http://www.taichichen.com/chenresourcesindex.htm is different than what I’ve seen videos of Chen Zheng Lei performing.

I don’t just mean little differences in the way they learned or do things. The differences were so big that it was about a completely different form. But still called Xin Jia Yi Lu. I’m wondering if anyone can tell me whether or not the forms on the videos at the site I linked are actually the correct forms and names. (Lao Jia & Xin Jia)

I know what you mean, it seems that each teacher has added their own “flavour” to the forms. Not that they are changing the postures,“Lazily tie your coat” will always be more or less the same, it’s just that some teachers will add various silk reeling(motions) before that particular posture while others may jump from posture to posture.
I guess as long as the form they are doing adheres to the “Classics” it shouldn’t matter, then you just get in an arguement over the Classics.

I wish I could show you the other videos. The ones on that website for “xin jia yi lu” was completely different than the “xin jia yi lu” Chen Zheng Lei did on a VCD one of my friends showed me. I don’t mean just slight differences. I mean some movements were in different orders and some were missing. It was like a whole different form. But they were both called “xin jia yi lu”. So, do you know if the ones on the site there are correct forms for their names?

Not being able to see the vid does make it hard to judge, not that I’m qualified to be a judge. From what I do know is that the same series of movements may be made to look quite different, it all depends if you make big or small circles

There were many similarities. But there were a lot of differences too. For example, in the form Xin Jia Yi Lu, there is a sequence which has a right front slap kick and then a left front slap kick then turn around and left side kick the other way. After this sequence there are some more movements and then Chen Zheng Lei was going back the other way and did a jump front kick. The lady in this video at the site I linked never did a jump front kick at all. That’s a pretty big difference. Not just in silk reeling circle differences.

Well you got me Ricky, I just watched the clips, lao jia and xin jia and they both seem to have been abbreviated. Perhaps it was that the clips would have been too big for the whole form, the lao jia usually takes 12-15 minutes to do and she had it completed in just over 6 minutes.
I don’t know if you study Chen or not, if not then I would trust the Chen Zheng Li form as he is one of the top Chen Masters.

I’ve learned a little bit. The basics and some Qi Gong and then a short form. I haven’t learned the longer forms yet. But watching those differences had me wondering.

On that site it said she did most of Lao Jia Yi Lu. So, I didn’t expect that to be the same. But it said nothing like that for the Xin Jia Yi Lu and there was no jump front kick. I was just watching for reference anyway and was confused. I’ll go watch Chen Zheng Lei now.
