Caught a Cold...

Hello all of my KungFu friends,

A few days ago I caught a head cold and haven’t been doing much training since, with exception to a short session of TaiChi-like exercises in the morning.

My question to you all, if you’re sick (just mildly, nothing serious), how much training do you do and of what type? Do you go to class and get snot all over the place, spreading the virus, or do you wait until you’ve mostly kicked the cold? If you do train, how hard do you train? At home? Or just wait until you’re mostly over the bug.

Unless I’m nauseous and/or bed-ridden, I train like I would any day it was. Most of the guys at my school figure if they’re gonna get sick they’d rather just get it over with then miss out on training with each other. That, and if our Sifu’s sick, we’re all gettin exposed to it any darn way.

I think it’s entirely possible we’re all just stubborn.

I don’t catch colds. I whisper ‘Chuck Norris’ every morning.

If I train hard with a cold, that cold will get much worse. If I go a little easy and take some rest I can get healthy to train harder sooner. I always want to train hard but sometimes have to make a decisioin for the long run.

I would just rest, and maybe go over some techniques or something in your head.

If anything, don’t go to class and spread the germs around. You never know who has an important business trip or something coming up and can’t afford to get sick.

if you’re not completely contagious, sitting on the sidelines and observing/taking notes can be good for you. I’ve often noted things I’d missed when on the floor and in the mix so to speak.

but, yea, if you’re contagious…stay home.

What about the herbal gong fu remedy for colds/flus. I went to a Chinatown herb shop a couple of years ago when I was sick as a dog and had strep throat. The acupuncturist they hired looked at my tongue, and gave me a bag of herbs to boil in water and drink. It worked so good that only had to take one day, instead of the three consecutive days SHE said to take it. As you can imagine, a month and a half later it came back, and when I asked her for the same thing, she couldn’t remember what she had given me. So she gave me some new herb mix, that didn’t do a thing for me. To this day I’m wondering what in the heck that first herb pack consisted of!
