Iko Uwais will co-star opposite Frank Grillo in “Beyond Skyline,” a spinoff of the 2010 alien invasion adventure “Skyline.”

Uwais is best known for headlining “The Raid” films and for co-starring opposite Keanu Reeves in “Man of Tai Chi.” He will play the leader of an underground resistance that forms after aliens touch down on earth. Grillo plays a father looking for his abducted child.

Uwais will be joined in “Beyond Skyline” by Yayan Ruhian, his co-star in “The Raid” franchise and the upcoming “The Night Comes for Us.” The pair will also act as fight choreographers on the film — the dazzling hand-to-hand combat sequences in “The Raid” films are a testament to their skills in that department.

Liam O’Donnell will direct the film, in addition to writing it, while Greg and Colin Strause (the directors of the original “Skyline”) will produce along with Matthew Chausse and Mike Wiluan.

Producer Greg Strause said he tapped the Uwais and Ruhian because, “We’re showcasing a new kind of alien combat, so who better to collaborate with than the most innovative fight team in the world?”

Strause’s visual effects studio Hydraulx is partnering with Infinite Studios on the production. Filming is set to begin in Batam, Indonesia in early December.

Roman Koplevich’s Red Sea Media is handling the foreign sales at AFM. Uwais is repped by Management 360.

This looks promising

although i wouldn’t go so far to say about Uwais “co-starring opposite Keanu Reeves” in Man of Tai Chi

WARPATH: Iko Uwais Reteams With ‘Beyond Skyline’ Helmer Liam O’Donnell For New Sci-Fi Action Adventure [EXCLUSIVE]

LEE B. GOLDEN III

Actor and action star Iko Uwais is tapped for the lead role in the tentatively titled Warpath, from director Liam O’Donnell (Beyond Skyline, Portals). The film will rejoin both star and director following their previous collaboration on 2017’s sci-fi sequel, Beyond Skyline, with Frank Grillo and Yayan Ruhian.

Exact plot details are unknown, but I am told that Uwais will play “a small-time criminal who, after discovering a powerful artifact in the midst of a world-altering event, embarks on a perilous mission across Indonesia to save his people from warring factions of dangerous adversaries”. Uwais is also bringing his team on board for the film’s action design.

Uwais has accrued a decade of screen credits that have earned him acclaim in the martial arts movie arena, with credits partly including Merantau and both installments of Gareth Huw Evans’ The Raid, Jesse Johnson’s action ensemble Triple Threat, Joe Taslim headliner The Night Comes For Us and Lionsgate’s latest release, Expend4bles. He can next be seen in upcoming sci-fi flick, Ash, from director Flying Lotus and also starring Eiza González and Aaron Paul.

O’Donnell catapulted into sci-fi fame after serving as producer on 2010 alien invasion thriller, Skyline, ultimately helming the sequel, as well as its third installment, Skylines. Along with Warpath, he is additionally attached to direct the fourth chapter in the Skyline saga, Skyline: Radial, reportedly with Lindsey Morgan reprising her role from the films.

The director’s 2024 production schedule folllowing last week’s end of the 118 day-long SAG-AFTRA strike further includes Martin Henderson-led shark thriller, Alphas, on which XYZ Films boarded world sales during AFM earlier this month.

First Forum review - belated

I just realized I never reviewed this. I saw it some time ago, so my memory might be sketch.

Its Grillo vs Uwais. Space predators invade sucking up peeps like dry rice in a vacuum, riding in alien mega tech battle suits, and yes, this gets all kaiju too. Sanguineuos - lots of schloosh sounds as aliens get shanked. The plot is extravagantly dumb and the ng reveal too many green screens. Not a great film, in fact quite flawed, but if you like watching people’s brains get ripped out their skulls, this film is for you.

Some or all of the martial arts was pretty bad. Watching Uwais through one sequence, I kept thinking, “This is the guy who did The Raid?” Regardless, I confess I would’ve watched this anyway. Grillo vs. Uwais. Even if it was a short muddy fight. 'nuf said.

I drifted off a couple times. Regaining consciousness at one point, I saw that there was now a baby with the small group. “Where’d the baby come from?” I wondered. Moments later some guy joins (rejoins?) the group, glances over at the baby, and asks Grillo, “Where’d the baby come from?” Grillo gets an amused look on his face and says, “Well, let me tell you.” But then he doesn’t, as if it’s too weird to explain. I could have rewound and tracked it down eventually. I did not.

For extra credit, there was a threequel (Beyond Skyline was a sequel to Skyline)

Skylin3s (2021)

It’s on Netflix and Yayan is in it so I gave it a peep. I wasn’t expecting much and didn’t get much so it was okay. Sort of an Aliens 2 poach. Yayan has alien claw hands and fights a little bit with them. There’s several fight scenes with the rest of cast. Mediocre at best. It was a bit hard to understand because I kinda forgot what happened in the last one and this one relies heavily upon remembering that stuff.

Sword fights! Crazy lite-up lazer sword. Never quite understood what the dealio was with that but it was a sword moment.

EXCLUSIVE: XYZ Films has pre-bought all U.S. rights to distribute under-the-radar martial arts sci-fi action threequel Skyline: Warpath, written and directed by Liam ODonnell (Beyond Skyline) and starring Iko Uwais (The Raid Franchise) and Scott Adkins (Undisputed).

Louis Mandylor, Randall J. Bacon and Yayan Ruhain round out the cast on the project which is currently filming in Indonesia. XYZ Films will release domestically in early 2025.

Set within the Skyline universe and five years after the events of Beyond Skyline, the movie follows Sua (Uwais) as he leads The Resistance against the aliens. When he discovers the powerful alien Radial Gauntlet, he must deal with both the corrupt Eric (Adkins) and the army of alien invaders. Above and below are first look images.

Pic is produced by Matthew Chausse and Evangelo Kioussis. The deal was negotiated by Chausse on behalf of the filmmakers with Maxime Cottray from XYZ Films. Palisades Park Pictures is handling international sales.

In partnership with XYZ Film, the original Beyond Skyline film was distributed by Vertical Entertainment before its festival debut at Sitges Film Festival in Spain in the fall of 2017. Starring Frank Grillo, it went on to play a host of genre festivals. A sequel was released in 2020.

Uwais is best known for hit martial arts franchise The Raid and recently co-starred in XYZs science fiction actioner Ash, directed by Flying Lotus.

Since we first met Iko Uwais, Matthew Chausse and I have been pushing to make a star vehicle for him like Warpath. Pairing him with the truly versatile action legend Scott Adkins, along with XYZ films, the company that started things off for us, has been a dream come true, said Liam ODonnell.

XYZs recent slate includes Blackberry, Seven Veils, Backspot and Netflix original Havoc.
