Main Organizations
At the Sports complex Olympic house - SW of Wanchai - huge building isolated beside a sports field - has Traditional and Wushu Association offices. (has many official sports Orgs there swimming, boxing, karate , judo etc - all have offices there). There you drop by those or the two main Kung fu offices (Trad or Wushu) - find out what events are in town. The Trad guys are not there as often as the Wushu people. I lucked out once - got VIP tickets to Beijing Wushu team that was in town the guy in the Wushu office had some extra and just gave them to me.

In Kowloon:
Jingwu - at Nathan either at Jordan or Yau Ma Tei - many different teachers on different nights and a referral service to teachers in HK. A good Eagle Claw Master is there.

And the main office of the Trad org at Nathan and Mong Kok - no teaching there but can informally catch various members of the org esp if they are having a meeting and ask for referrals of pump them for info.

Schools - Generally do not advertise - something about having to pay the government license fees and nobody likes to do that - that’s why you don’t get much “yellow pages” listings for martial arts - so you have to network.
There is is a northern White crane teacher with storefront on the main road there in Wanchai - runs some business doubles as his kung fu office. .

Convenient parks to meet and watch kung fu people, Kowloon - Kowloon Park - has big sports complex there, and on on HK Island - Victoria Park near Causeway bay and some smaller parks spaces around there.

Bookstores - I got them all doped out every time I go to HK and I make the rounds but hard to describe and I lost my address book. The English bookstores are never two much good but occasionally find something, there are two Chinese chain bookstores which usually you can snag some bargains or something good, and the one in Central has large MA selection.
(Maybe will edit in some address after I check).
Edit in
Joint Publishing and the commercial press are the two chains,

A supplies store in Wanchai best one - , easy access always going by on main bus/streetcar route.
–> There are very visible tourist offices at the Star Ferry on both sides of Victoria Harbour - in Central and in Kowloon - just pop in there and see whats happening - lots of brochures - just go up to counter and ask if any ma events/competitions, they look up anything on the computer - big tourist town - lots of help.

(Can’t see any tournaments, demos or competitions officially listed but sometimes they just turn up like maybe a event at the Kowloon Sports Center in Kowloon Park without much advertising or whatever.
Anyway you can ask the HK Cultural services phone (about 5 to 7 cents a minute trans-pacific if you have international) or interweb in advance - - that’s what they are there for. )

have fun
Thank you so much for most of your input.
As for David Jamieson glad you have a got a good laugh out of it.
Truth is I won’t be staying there long and occupied 1/2 of my time (so finding an instructor is not practical).
For the other 1/2 of my time I have no idea what’s in Hong Kong in terms of specific events, addresses, etc.
So any information no matter how small or detailed was greatly appreciated!!!
And wolfen thanks for the detailed reply!

It was useful to me to put out the detail to save for myself. My HK notebook was stolen ( a big loss) so I used the net and my memory on what to research to get the information back.
…
I’ve been in an out of HK an extraordinary number of times including by air from many countries and by bus and train from the mainland - got the best ways down pat. Including once I came in via Macao by air (they had a special trying to encourage casino visits), I know how to get around in HK as an expat, very well.
Visiting schools and instructors is not necessarily to get instruction, just fun to understand what MA people are doing and interview the teachers.
If you want to say how long, why you are going and where you expect to stay I could give you better recommendations. Are you set up to stay in Kowloon, HK Island or elsewhere?
Just ask any question.
Don’t rule out the “tourist bit”, HK is an international travel hub and they have the best of the World there for all kinds of cultural activities and they have created many venues for the performing arts. There is always something superb going on.
I make a regular round of certain artistic venues as well every time I am there just to see what’s happening. The addresses I gave are all easy to get to.
You have to watch yourself though - you can use the MTR , Bus system (air con - very modern thanks to the British) very , ferry system to get around very fast but you try to walk through the masses of people in some areas can slow your time down by hours - wall to wall people - so don’t think you can just walk a few blocks quickly.
(Anecdote - I was staying at a mountain hostel and hanging out with the staff and some newbie walked in to the office and bragged to us about the “cheap” ride he had just gotten from the airport. as he saw the looks on our faces he began to understand that he had been conned. In fact, he hadn’t needed to even take a taxi - there an airport express MTR to downtown and easy connections or cabs from there.)
I always stay at the YKHA hostel system in the natural beautiful places - fresh air , beautiful scenery and an easy commute.

…and do some mountain hiking in HK. You are never more than 50 -90 minutes away from peace and quiet on a mountain trail high up somewhere with spectacular views looking down at the city or city lights.
http://www.hkoutdoors.com/hiking-and-biking-in-hong-kong/hiking-in-hk.html
All the people are on the land by the shore. The interior of HK Island is mountains ,trails and a protected reservoir freshwater system. There are detailed mountain trail maps from the government. I have them all. You can hike from one hour to five days (I spent on the MacLehose Trail).
and there is the WW2 battle scarred fortified tunnels and pillboxes mostly still intact at Shing Men reservoir, (smugglers ridge) for a 3 or 4 hour exploration - no one around and no one to stop you.
HK is my favourite world city for the cultural variety the re nao, and the beauty of the architecture/environment.
The net is really useful, you can find out everything in advance, the addresses and how to get around and save yourself a lot of time when you get there. Look at the online maps and see where you will be and where the areas are, don’t wait til you get there or you’ll burn your time.
Wolfen
I appreciate all your advice. Thanks!
Now I wish I came here earlier in regards for my other plans. ha ha ha
