I just acquired a set, and I have nothing to throw them at. I’m thinking a bunch of flattened cardboard boxes would work. What do you think?

3/4 inch plywood is what I use. I cut out my own soloette in 3/4 in plywood, have my wife paint on a suit on it, and go to town. I throw for about 1/2 an hour once a week, and I usually take a couple of “walk by” throws here and there as well. I go through a couple of peices a year in plywood. You can throw as hard as you want, and although you will often peirce the plywood, it is very unlikely your blade with go through and continue on.
Just to brag, as long as I’m under about 25’ I can hit anything within about 3 inches. That includes right hand and left hand, pitching style, side arm, and even underhanded. Moreover, I can hit in the torso area almost every single time at a run.
Self taught and it’s the best meathod I’ve ever found for practical throwing. Throw it like a base ball and point your finger where you want it to go. I’ve had a radar on one throw clock my knife moving 86mph.
What knives are you throwing with? I would highly recommend the mid sized Gil Hibben throwers. But I would not recommend his throwing meathod, not for practical throwing that is.

Oh, and I paint on the suit because the tie shows me right were the throat is, the pocket gives me reference for the heart, the belt buckle and pockets give reference for the belly and groin.

I thought they were. Oh well. The point is sharp. They’re 10.5" and pretty heavy, I don’t know the exact weight tho.

do you find the hard surface of wood is hard on the blade? just curious, i used to throw mine into plywood also, but over time the tips would get a “little” worn.
using melons does no damage at all to the blade, but i guess the melon bill would get high for an avid thrower not to mention you would get sick of eating melons.

i draped an old carpet over a tree branch, underside out. worked pretty well.
I used Foam, (eperan)It is like styrofoam but more resiliant and doesnt chip. Everytime you pull a knife out the hole reseals. Paint silhouettes and throw.

Wow, there sure are a lot of throwin’ freaks in here. I’ve really been contemplating it for a while now, but everytime I mention it to my wife (as a gift suggestion), she just smirks, and asks what I really could use. 
Anyway, Just yesterday, I was browsing the topic on the internet (as I always do when I’m bored), so I find it to be quite a coincidence that my B-Day is coming up and All this knife throwing info is just dropping into my lap.
Does anyone here have any throwing spike experience? That seems pretty interesting as well.

hehe, I’m not talking about buying the stuff (I’ve already been doing some research on that, but I will add Ebay to my list). I was talking about techniques, bad habits, and crap like that. I can get targets cheap too. We’ve got a lot of neighborhood kids running around all the time. Great moving targets if you ask me :eek:
