i want last night to be the last time i have to let the wieght slide off my chest to one side and then try to lift one end of what i was benching up off my chest. it sucks, but it happens all the time. allot more now since i started benching more than my body weight in a decent amount of reps.
is there any piece of training equipment that can replace a spot? i don’t have anyone that i can really rely on to come down and spot me all the time due to schedule conflicts and what not and i actually prefer to lift alone most of the time.
The smith machine is a great spot for chest and shoulder(military press)- If you dont know which one it is just ask someone in the gym, they will know.
actually i have a decent setup at my house and lift from there.
i guess i should have been more specific in my question.
i want to continue to lift free weights but was wondering if there is any piece of equiptment that would catch the weight if i cant put it up again. like one that you could set to catch as it touches your chest so that you could rest or at least slide out from underneeth it.
you can get a power rack, which is like a smith machine, but without the cable set up, you have racks to hold the bar, and a bar that goes across to catch your barbell so it doesn’t crush you. You can also use it for squats. There are attachments like chin-up bars, high and low pulleys, and dipping bars that bolt on to it and it takes no more space than your bench, also you can pick one up for about 3-400 dollars. add a good adjustable bench with attachments like leg curl/extension, and a preacher bench and you are set.We have this in our school plus dumbell racks, what more do you need?
These (or the like) would be placed each to a side of you, near your arm lowerings.
-put them near your feet so that you could push them with your feet so they would roll underthe bar if it was downyou could lift the bar some by beginning to sit-up. You should have stablized guides so that the table roll to the right area~.
-tie a rope/twine to your ankle/foot. the other end goes to the rollable nightstand/endtable with books on them. pass the string/twine/rope around the legs of the bench~so that you could straighten your legs to pull the tables back and to a position under the bar. Again, guides should be used for the tables(unless you’re Certain of how they’ll roll); and begin to sit-up to get that extra lift to get the bar high enough to lower onto the books. Also scooching down some could give you enoughspace to get the bar on the books. But you might have tospin on the bench to dip your head under the currently supported bar.
Very some such, perhaps might have been, likely say some, some not.
at our school gym we have something on the bench which is like a power rack (tho i dont know what that is, im just going by that description)
on the vertical supports, it has about 4 holes on each one, and u can stick in 2 little supports, one on each side. so if you cant get the weight back up while benching, u can jam it above your head onto the vertical bars, then let it slide down onto the supports.
I think I’ve dropped my kettlebell idea (or at least thinking about going with the cheaper 80 dollar alternatives). This is what I’ve found in my search for a squat rack, there are three, all of them less than 300. Just hope that Oshman’s carries one of them in stock wherever I end up goin: http://www.oshmans.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=693996&cp=710956
Hope it helps, otherwise, I was lookin at doin just weight I could handle- but I’m starting to realize how unrealistic that might be.
is the one i have in my basement. my sister got it for my birthday last year. doesn’t seem to help with the bpresses though . . if you cant put it up your still struggeling with it trying not to just drop it on the cement and ruin your weights.
Please don’t do squats on a smith machine, unless that’s absolutely the only way you can do them.
Squat racks are perfect for squats, use the safety bars to save you if you can’t get back up. Hell, you could even bench in there, as long as you’re not confined to motion along a track (a la smith machine).
In other words, you don’t need a spot on squat, ever. Besides, ever been spotted on a squat? It’s the most uncomfortable thing in the world.

I was thinking about the Universal machine actually, but i’ve got a while to wait to get one. I was gonna go shopping and see what was available in the area; before trying to order one online.
in the meantime, don’t use collars on the bar when you bench. Worse case scenario-you get stuck with the bench on your chest-(who hasn’t?) roll it down to your stomach, tilt to the side letting the weights slide off the bar and it will dump onto the other side off your body. The neighbors downstairs might get upset, but heck-you’re alive. Afew years back a guy died while benching in his basement. It rolled onto his throat strangling him, and crushing his windpipe. It was ruled an accident. Funny thing-his ‘best friend’ said they were both experienced lifters, and training partners, and he was surprised that he would attempt this lift, which was more than he was used to alone without a spotter. Another funny thing, before the ‘accident’ they were arguing about his girlfriend, and his ‘friend’.
hmmmm,so what they’re sayin, is that an experienced lifter tried to attempt a lift, heavier than he’s evr done, ALONE, without a spotter. Frankly, I think it’s murder.
