I have seen this mentioned a few times but do not understand what it is exactly.
The public notice that a master is taking is taking a “closed door” student.
also,
The public notice that a student wishes to become a disciple of a master.
There is a ceremony, the red envelope is given and received, a traditional picture is taken, other stuff happens and then… food.
It is well documented from many traditions. Some don’t observe it, some still do.
