Actually, most of that stuff had already been covered in previous threads. Look at threads in the time just after Sept. 11, I don’t think anything new was covered in the locked threads from this week. It was just a repeat of those threads. Of special interest are the threads “Why the middle east hates us Part I and II” or something like that. Those have lots of articles that are much more detailed and verifiable. This weeks was a pale shadow of those, no real sources quoted, just “Americans have killed a lot of people”. Just check out the older threads, they are generally superior in content to this weeks, whatever side of the debate you are on.

OK, let’s get a few things straight here. First of all, Dragon, if you are going to say “everybody hates the U.S. and it’s true, so I don’t have to back it up” you make your statement useless by default. That’s the same as saying “All you have to do is believe what I say and it will be true”. Sorry, that doesn’t hold water with me. A few radical journalists does not a country make.
Second, no one here has EVER said the U.S. has never done anything wrong. So that argument is out the window too.
If you put any stock at all in the Bible as a historical document (some do, some don’t, it’s your choice) then you know from references there that conflict has been going on in the Middle East for at least 2,000 years! How old is America? And somehow this is all our fault?
It’s been said before and I’ll restate it here. America IS the largest foreign aid supplier, period. To quote Dragon “It’s true so I don’t have to name it”. Right? Well, how about this? Last year alone we sent approx. $200 million in foreign aid to Afghanistan! How is it our fault if the “government” (or shall I say oppressive executioners) of Afghanistan did not use it correctly or bother to distribute it amongst their own people? Remember when Ethiopia was the “current fad” in world politics because they were starving? AMERICA sent over financial aid, farm equipment, people to train them how to farm…know what they did after we left? They used the tires on the farm machinery to start fires at night so they could stay warm. Then somehow it became America’s fault that they were still starving. Taking the “fad stance” on world politics will make you look like a fool every time.
Yes, in America you are free to look at both sides (a freedom that gets you shot in the head in a soccer field in Afghanistan). You are free to draw your own conclusions from the facts.
As far as analogies go, let’s try this one: You and I are neighbors. I don’t like how loud you listen to your stereo. I ask you to turn it down, you say you will, but a week later, it’s back up to what I think is unacceptable. To “teach you a lesson” I kill your dog. Who’s right? Should I go unpunished? After all, I asked you to turn it down, right? In my opinion, you’d have every right to throw me headfirst down the stairs!
In a matter such as this, there are forums you can use to prove your case. Also in politics, there are forums one can use to PROVE THEIR CASE! If our policies are wrong, SHOW US! Don’t just kill our dog to prove a point. All that will get you is thrown down the stairs. And I say keep throwing.

a lot of people are putting words in my mouth. I never said we dont send out aid to other countries. That is a good thing that we do. But the good doesnt cancel out the bad.
From what i’ve just read our sanctions in iraq kill 5000 babies a month. Our idea is that if we allow the people of Iraq to suffer, they will overturn their gov’t or something like that.
Also, i never said something is a fact because i say it is. But it is definetely a fact that countries in every continent in the world have negative feelings toward the united states. Are you denying this as true??

Anyway, those threads cover the same territory in a fairly structured debate with sources cited, so there’s really more point to them, not just each person’s platform. The true politician merely creates response by making inflammatory remarks that his/her supporters want to hear, and takes a violently opposed stance to the people his/her supporters don’t like. This weeks threads were a good example, as not much hard info was being stated and backed. Again, don’t bother reinventing the wheel. The threads I named do a better job, study them before trying to repeat them without hard info at hand.

Like I said before, back it up with facts. Tell us exactly how our sanctions are killing Iraqi babies. I can make some unfounded claim too, without facts, and to anybody who argues it just keep belaboring the same statement over and over. For example, “I just read that snails are the main cause of heart attacks”.

Do you know what the number one and two causes of death are in Iraq? Heart disease and diabetes. Hardly sounds like the causes of mass death in a truly impovershed country, does it?
I’m asking for a solid argument, not the same rhetoric over and over. Appealing to the ‘emotional’ side of an issue is cheap. I’m an open-minded person, I just demand a little more than an internet site by people who claim to be veterans and a few college campus radicals who think it’s cool to be on the “peace kick”.
By the way, as far as killing innocents goes, if America was really the grand exterminators your unnamed “every other countries” said we are, then wouldn’t this war be over already? It would only take one or two nuclear devices to decimate a country the size of Texas. But that argument doesn’t have any emotional appeal I guess.

I don’t think that is irrelevant at all. It absolutely does play a part. Anyone who thinks that a lot of, if not all, conflict ISN’T influenced by economics isn’t looking at the whole picture.

I don’t think the oil is what keeps us from nuking. We can get oil from other countries than Afghanistan, but who’s gonna trade with us after we nuke their neighbor, plus we’re trying hard not to hit civilians(harder than the terrorists tried). Nuking is a very volatile action that could turn into a political bomb, plus we don’t want to exterminate people. OK, I’ve babbled again. Better go before I remember my point.

I was hoping this was going to accomplish something, but I can see now you aren’t interested. You told us to do the research when you made an unfounded statement (all countries hate us) and we asked for facts, but now you want me to do yours? Instead of presenting a case, as a competent debater would do, you simply attack my post. You posted initially saying you don’t have an opinion, but your following posts seem to indicate otherwise. If you wanted an argument and/or a flame war, just come out and say so. At least the trolls have that much integrity.

The debate has already been done, its been done better, and its been done with hard info. This is not debate, this is just senseless argument, and its not even senseless argument about kung fu. I’m out of here.
By the way, Badger, I’m glad that you are aware of the reasons that that article’s tone was unacceptable. No offence taken, and the point that the author lost early on(a small number of muslims in the US may have harbored and known about the terrorists activities) is certainly frightening, but I’m very sure that any people, muslim or not, who behave in such a manner, will be made examples of.
As an aside, some junior high kids by me ground up some drywall, put it in a package, and placed it at their school in order to get days off from an anthrax scare. We’ve got more to worry about than muslims, and I personally don’t know any muslims that I have to worry about. They like it here, unlike some people born here that seem to think the world should go their way.
Who am I kidding? I can’t help but post on this thread. I get the cold sweats when I go too long without posting. Where’s my needles?

i believe that it is common knowledge that alot of this world has negative feelings toward us, maybe i am wrong to believe that it is common knowledge, but i dont see why we should doubt that. I dont think there is any reason to prove that, i think most reasonable people would agree with it.

If this were still a debate, I would be interested. You have been asked for facts several times and have not presented any. Why extend you the same courtesy? The information is there, go and find it. Now I have used your tactic, and now I am done.
