What do you think the next MA flavor will be?

So back in the late 40’s and early 50’s, when the GI’s were getting back, Judo seemed to be the in thing.

In the 60’s and 70’s we were introduced to Karate. And then Bruce Lee introduced us to Kung Fu and eventually to Jeet Kune Do. Muhamad Ali also introduced us to Western Boxing. Celebrities seem to flock into these styles making them the “in” thing.

In the 80’s Tae Kwon Do became the in things for families and kids. Still has a pretty good following for kiddies.

In the late 80’s early 90’s we were introduced to MMA. Did not really take but somewhat had a cult following. There also a resurgence of Aikido due to all the Segal movies. In the west coast a brief, very brief surge in Ninjitsu due to all the American Ninja movies (way to go Michael Dudikoff).

Now MMA is taking hold. Seems to be the “in” thing that everyone and their mother is talking about. Ticket to see fights live now command hundreds and thousands for ringside seats at UFC. Celebrities are now coming to these venues. And much like boxing, many see this as their “way out” of something in their lives. It is also becoming the flavor of the month for many MA schools out there. Basically if you want to make money, teach MMA, or at the very least ad it to the curricullum.

So let’s FFWD 10yrs from now. I am sure MMA will continue to be a venue. I can see it replacing boxing as a form of entertainment. However, peoples taste are finicky and constantly changes as I have described in the timeline above. What will be the next in thing.

Here’s what I think: Given the pussification of the world. Growing aging population. As well as the move toward non-violence. I can see Taiji being the bomb diggity art of the 22nd century.

Ethiopian Sumo.

After this weekends very very successful South African National San Shou Championships, I would say San Shou is the next best thing… least in South Africa. Man! What an event. What a following.

I am not sure, but I think it will have something to do with Squids, and Space aliens…and maybe spaghetti Monsters.

haha…ha

the next MA flavor

nacho. I’m working on a nacho-colored ninja suit to match the forum here. That way we can all blend in.

It will require one to wear a mullet.

No, that was one eighties trend I just don’t think will be comming back… I hope. Same goes for that long hair on top and shaved around the sides thing from the nineties…

Perhaps the 'fro?

Stick fighting. Fisticuffs and wrestling is getting boring, time to pull out the blunt weapons. More emphasis on the weapon than on the blunts. :stuck_out_tongue:

Giant robot fighting. It’s the real deal.

the fro is already back. People started wearing ‘natural’ styles again about 8 years ago - fros, twists, dreads, etc. Heck, I have dreads.

I still see the shaved head thingy too, though not as much - and the mohawk has made a comeback. it’s only a matter of time for the mullet.

dudikoff? bah. sho kosugi was the man. taiji is already one of the most popular arts in the world. I don’t think it will see additional fame. It is way too boring for mass consumption, so it will never be something in the public eye like mma, boxing or san shou. I think 10 years from now, mma will be peaking.

For the hardcore: kali.

See Beniccio Del Torres, Tommy Lee Jones (The Hunted), Matt Damon (Bourne), and I’m pretty sure if you watch a bit of the Supernatural TV show, Blade and Casino Royale you’ll see bits n bobs of it too.

For the rest, the boxercise and all those bull pseudo-styles will continue to grow… and with them, yes, the mullet will resurface. Me, as soon as I move back to my home soil, I’m going straight back to my mohican!

As for MMA, I think it’ll probably reach its peak soon, if not already. Can’t be too many more organizations and formats before it implodes or at least reaches saturation point. And for every good ambassador of fighting sports like the Coutures and Bonjaskys there’ll be at least one really scary (non-potential-MMA-mom-friendly) **** like Fedor, one ‘lad’ like Rutten and four immature, undisciplined thug asses like Leben, Abbot, Kimbo and those doofuses from Bullshido turning up to a videoed challenge fight with a carload of drugs and a gun!

Unless of course, it becomes common knowledge that there is really good MMA training in the Middle East where the latest wave of terrorists are trained… … then maybe it’ll become more popular with every terrorist attack like in Glasgow when the guy took three people to restrain him…

Escrima sticks…wrapped in barbed wire.
And if the current MMA craze has any influence, Speedo thongs will be the preferred attire.
Oh god , I think I just made myself throw up a little.

And of course, knifefighter will be at the forefront of the revolution.

Sevenstar in a mullet… good lord…

LOL. I think the more brutal the sport is the gayer the attire will be.

Football = Satiny spandex
Wrestling/MMA = Nuthuggers
How bout bull fighting, you look like a cross between a pimp and gay parade attendee

Yes, but in 10 years or so the 'fro is going to be a status symble of martial arts might. People will see a fro walking down the streat and run in fear, for the wearer of the 'fro will have no equal. People like Screach will sudenly be cool and everyone will be begging thier hair dressor to give them a horrible perm so they can emulate it.

Team MMA fights will be the future.

Instead of just one-on-one fights, it would be maybe five-on-five, perhaps a few more. The venue would be changed from just a ring to a basketball court sized area with constructs like walls, pillars, and ditches to either hide or maneuver around.

Several Referees would be positioned throughout to stop the action immediately when it is deemed someone is KO’d or about to get KO’d or submitted or injured.
Should it be a melee when the action needs to be stopped, everyone would stop where they are and separated until the eliminated person is escorted out of the field. If any person was in a dominated position, they would re-set in the same postion, as they do in Pride, and the action restarted at the signal.

The team with the last remaining fighter(s) wins.
