With singular possesive, the apostrophe is BEFORE the s.
With plural possesive or words already ending in s, the apostrophe comes after.
The apostrophe is ALSO (NOT only) used in contractions.

No concurrence. I was trying to stimulate your thought process. If you’re going to argue that “Charles’ cooking” shows that there is no possessive usage of apostrophes, then “Helen’s laugh” directly refutes your argument one line before your trump card in the same quote. Unless you would like to argue that “Helen’s laugh” means “Helen is laugh”. My earlier post didn’t make it so clear, so I’ll edit it for consistency. Can you think of an example where “Helen’s laugh” fits with your view of contractive-only apostrophe usage? I can’t.
