I’m currently studying the Southern Sil Lum Five Family Fist/ Five Animals as taught by GrandMaster Wong Ark-Yuey, and I had a question about the names of the five families. In our Kwoon they are : Choy, Li, Fut, Mok, Hung. However, I have seen others refer to the five families under different names.. why is this? Is it just do to spelling or is there a different five families?
Lau Ga
When people refer to the southern five families, they are generally referring to choy, li, hung, mok, and lau. These names are surnames (neglecting discussion on whether Hung refers to a family, emperor, rebel cry…). Fut ga is another southern system.
Cheers,
