perhaps i’m suggesting opening up too huge a can of worms, but i’m curious what you all think about a topic either listing and briefly describing feud’s wing chun people have had.
the possibility for expansion on this is nice, because i wouldn’t mind eventually talking about the psychology that seems to run parallel to most feuds (why some people go from feud to feud, while even their closest brothers and sisters seem immune to this stuff and have nothing to do with it).
however, the possibility for this to just run sour is obvious and i don’t want to do this if it’s just going to turn out like the bullsh1t on vingtsun.com.hk’s forums.
however, if it can be done, it can be done here. the moderators do a good job at curbing hostilities, and the members do an even better job and not letting their panties get bunched.
anyhoo, please let me know what you think. i’d like opinions from everyone, including the moderators/administrators. this can be a fruitful discussion or it can be crap.
I’ve heard many discussions quite often turning into arguments between students at my club. Its mainly due to people saying this wouldn’t work or that wouldn’t work when thay have only been training for a year. then you get people who have been training for 5 years + saying well yeah it does cos i’ve done it. It usually ends up with the more advanced student saying something like well if you don’t think it works for you then don’t use it, but it works for others. I’ve had dissagreements with one of my friends about the effectiveness of a stamp kick which again usually ends up with me just stop talking about it and just let him think he’s right.
I think it was Augustine Fong that once said you have to “believe in your instructor and believe in Wing Chun’s techniques and principles” if you want the system to work for you.
If people claim, after one year’s study, that certain techniques would never work… then for them they never will.
Everyone is different of course, and what works for one may not work for another, but faith in the system coupled with hard work and training is surely the answer when asking questions of effectiveness.
Wing Chun/Wing Tsun/Ving Tsun etc, however they may differ from one “master” to another, are, in essence, all the same martial art. I’ve seen some great exponents and fighters from various camps.
The one thing that marks the good from the crap is never the systems itself, but the level of committment of each person involved. The world of WC is full of bickering and backstabbing, usually not face to face.
While we may critique, would we express these views in person to the Leung Ting’s, Kan’s etc, of this world. Regardless of lineage and personal approach, I’d give my right arm to train with anyone who’s practised Wing Chun for 20-30 years or more.
Live and let live, blah blah blah.

Hmm. I wouldnt say that you need to have faith in the system, as strictly speaking that would imply that evidence of effectiveness is not required.
I would agree however that you need personal conviction that the system is going to work for you, maybe faith in ones own WC?
Maybe Im just nit-picking.
Oh, and with regards to your last comment, my instructor has been doing WC for 32 years, and Im lucky enough to live 10 minutes drive away. Jealous yet?
Having said that, Im dammn sure I wouldnt give up my right arm for anyone. Except maybe Lisa out of ‘Steps’.
The chalice from the palace has the pellet with the poison,
The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!
Giving up a limb is not an easy decision to make… but for Lisa from Steps I’d give ‘her’ my third leg.
I guess “faith in WC” is, in fact, standard for most of us on the forum. If we didn’t believe in it as a system, we’d be studying something else.
But yes, faith in our own wc is perhaps more apt.
The problem for some is that as beginners (I’ve been studying for seven months or so), we need to keep that belief in our art despite the fact our our abilities are limited. You can’t, after all, master a system in seven months.
As for being jealous… you are absolutely right. I hate you and want to ***** slap you… errr… this probably isn’t going to happen is it
Still, I will train, I will improve, I will enter Pride, I will defeat the best, I will start my own forum, the world will know my name… all will study Wing Bruised Gung Fu!!!

i know what you’re saying. my instructor has been studying WT for about 17 years and is truly amazing, both as a practitioner, teacher and person. i think we’re very fortunate to have what we do and be able to do it.
anyhoo, what are your opinions on just listing and describing (objectively, if it’s possible) some of the rivalries. being a student of GM Leung Ting, i know of quite a few my organization has had (when he was with us, Emin vs. William Cheung, Emin vs. the Gracies, Emin vs. the minotaur; and many more).
don’t get me wrong – i don’t advocate feuding of any kind. i would much rather sit back and bullsh1t with you ladies and gents then spend my afternoons writing you all nastygrams. i’m just curious what all has gone on between different students/instructors of the arts.
i’m not asking that you begin to list them. what i’m asking is that you share with me your opinion of opening a discussion purely on this topic and the pros and cons of it.
It would certainly get a lot of use
But in the end it would all be propaganda. Not an entirely bad idea at all. In fact I am really hungry for stories from WC’s various lineages, clans, whatever.
Good idea

You just won’t last!”
