Rattan rings...

Do you use rattan rings for training in chi sau? How do they aid you? Conversely, are you against using rattan rings? If so, why?

How about steel rings? What are these normally used for - practicing forms?

Thanks..

Monkey man

In order to use the rattan rings to develop your chi sao you have to press outwards to maintain contact with the the rings. This is contrary to the forward energy that chi sao is supposed to have.

So are you saying that this is detrimental to training then? Do you use them?

Hi,

Rattan Rings are used in Wing Chun in China, but not for Chi Sao. As Redmond sifu mentioned, it would not be the most beneficial way to train Chi Sao

So how, exactly, are they used?!

Hi,

Splitting power. Anything that involves the drawing apart of the bridges (which is not what you’d want in Chi Sao). Some only do a few specific moves. One sub-branch in China has 108 movement set.
