Popular Bagua, Taichi vs Experts who can prove skills

Tolerance is Lao Tze wisdom when dealing with others.

It is the cornerstone of the Buddhist way of life.

So it is with great pleasure to find this group with sincere thoughts and not flames.

But we must be careful not to evaluate popular names and popular arts with the original way.

The original ways are not our ways. Yet the path
need not take so many years as most of people suggest.

As an avid chess player I found the moves of the great masters enlightening. So it can be with Bagua and Taichi. Why should we re-do the learning curve when there are more enlightening ways?

As an Orthopedic and Plastic Surgeon I cannot afford to error being on the wrong side of the learning curve. I must be quick to master the
task at hand.

So it is with Bagua and Taichi. “Move quickly but do not rush.” We were all born with great minds. Find those who can check mate you in several moves. Forget those who tell you it will take much time to check mate an opponent.

But be sure they can do so consistently and stand as a tesitimony to these “Invulnerable Arts” as attested to by Yang, Dong-I and other great teachers (Lao Tze)

By check-mating you in Bagua and Taichi we mean they can easily defeat you without effort. They should never be hit or touched. It’s as rare as a
great world chess champion but they are out there.

Wise words, Dr. Kuo, welcome to the forum.

It’s always nice to see another Chi-Towner on the board.

Most actions of men can be explained by observing a pack of dogs. Not wild dogs, just neighborhood dogs who all scurry under the fence on the same night and set off together to reclaim a glimmer of the glory their species possessed before domestication.

Good thoughts Dr Kuo

As an ex-Chicagoian, (where were you when I was learning to play chess?) I welcome to the forums.ü

Rock on, Chess player!

I’m learning, I suck. Can you recommend any good books that a college student could afford? I’ve seen the whole Microsoft press series, and they rule, but I can’t afford those

I grew up in Hyde Park but I lived in neighborhoods from Lincoln Park all the way north to around Loyola. I only know of 2 teachers that teach bagua in Chicago. (one is excellent, the other I have not met) I have not been living there for around 20 years although I do get back as often as possible.

Do you teach bagua as well? What part of town are you from? Also, do you know anyone in Chicago that specifically does Yin style baguazhang? Have you ever eaten at Hong Min’s?

Chicago

Count,
Who are the two people in chicago who do Bagua?

One of my teachers in Chicago was a long time student with Wai Lun Choi. I have met him a couple of times and rarely met anyone with his kind of ability. I have also heard about a teacher named Zhang Hong-Chao also on the North side but I have never met or spoken with him. Are you considering moving from New York?

Count,
Yes I’m moving at the end of august to start graduate school at Northwestern, so I’m keeping my eyes open for good schools in the area.
Anthroman

Anthroman,

You can get the contact info on both these teachers in the bagua directory at my website. Here is a link to Wai Lun Choi’s website. It’s kinda hot in August in Chi town.
