Viewing the planet from orbit (which is the claim suggested) is much different than viewing the planet from the moon.

.

Now if we are speaking orbit, which is the only thing humans have done since the first landing and orbiting of the moon. Well then it is well documented that human creations such as the Great Pyramids ARE in fact visible from orbit.
You might notice that “TangLangCh’uan” said “ONLY” as in “…it it does still suck that someone, somewhere is allowing this to go on at the only man-made structure that is visible from orbit…”

This is the common myth promulgated. And although you and I are scientists 😛 and know that the shuttle orbit is outside of the Karmen line and is technically in outer space, the “teeming masses” (include foreigners in that) had/have the idea it could be seen for the Moon and Mars and such and were in fact disappointed that it could not be seen from the Moon when somneone actually got there,

In fact The Wall is mostly only twenty feet wide and just one of tens of thousands of objects somewhat visible and losing out in competing to highways and many other structures. In fact many structures in USA are MORE visible than the Great Wall and Holland is the clear winner.

This was first brought to my attention when I saw an interview with a shuttle astronaut and when the subject was brought up. Her disdain, weariness and protestation evidenced her irritation upon hearing the common misconception and over-emphasis on this thing.

Notwithstanding the intense wish of many human beings to give themselves an identity to make their universe feel meaningful, perhaps it is a good idea to curve this enthusiam to a proper perspective.

The wall is pretty and best viewed from walking on it. However, I wouldn’t start selling tickets on inter-planetary junkets advertising this view, nor do I think the Wall has any prioritization on Shuttle Missions.

* * *

"The first problem comes in defining exactly where outer space is. Is it one hundred miles up? One thousand miles up? Halfway to the Moon? On the Moon itself? At the altitude the Space Shuttle orbits (typically between 190 and 350 miles above sea level), the Great Wall is a thin, barely visible line. But other objects are visible as well, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Panama Canal, and the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island. The Eisenhower interstates are also faintly visible as well, as well as crisscrossing patches of farmland adjacent to the Great Wall itself.

wow…forget i said anything…jesus tap-dancing christ…i wasn’t interested in starting yet \<u\>another\</u\> argument over a seemingly harmless subject…i’ll make sure to double-crosscheck my facts before i say anything next time…in fact, maybe i should take back that whole “tap-dancing” statement above…seeing as how i’m not 100% certain that jesus could tap-dance, nor am i certain that tap-dancing even existed in the time of christ…i wouldn’t want to get anyone’s historical or factual feathers all ruffled.

The Walls Fine

I was backpacking across china for 3 months with my girl and came home 2 months ago.

The wall when we went to it wasnt anything like you were describing - there was next to no tourists, touts or anything else except miles of decrepit wall and mountainous land.

Im my mind the parties are all held at the badalang section of the wall, and if thats the case then who cares…its a crappy tourist trap with a \*\*\*\* load of tame steps to walk up…I put extra emphasis on the word walk!!!

Simatai however was a blast from the past…at least thats the impression I got when I was climbing up it on all fours.

Don’t take it personally, TLC, it’s not about you it’s about the Wall. It’s an interesting study of myth and propaganda.

It’s not about being Literal, it’s about a myth about the Wall that has been deliberately promulgated and not realistically examined.
If you search the net you can find that many people got their back up about this and are setting the record straight. Especially now many of us have our attention on Outer Space.
You are a victim of propaganda and an example of the effectiveness of it. Most of our thoughts and ideas do not belong to us. We absorb then from others and repeat them when they “sound good” whether understoood or not. Sort of like parasitical viruses. So it is good for all of us to “drill down” and inspect our thoughts don’t you think?

You just popped up by accident as an example of someone who was repeating and transmitting the myth/gossip.

The largest Da Mo statue is opened to the public on August, 8th in Guan Zhou.

Da Mo was a priest that came to China and started Chan sect in the Shaolin temple.

The legend said that he has the Da Mo staff and a gown passed down.

He went back to the west and left a grass shoe behind.
