Oldschool Southeast Asian full contact fighting tournaments

I’m trying to find out more about this. I know that Wai Lun Choi, Tat Mau Wong, and alot of monkey guys fought in them, but I can’t seem to find out much more.

I believe Tai Yim may have also competed in those fights.

I don’t get mad.
I get stabby.

Don’t know about ‘old style’…

They sound similar to a few tournaments I fought in in the early 1990’s. I was fighting out of the Hong Seng kwoon in Singapore and competed in Malaysia (Selangor and just outside KL) and also in Manila (Mandaluyong) and in Singapore. Competition was open style (all styles) and full contact with takedowns allowed. No striking the throat, eyes or groin, but plenty of people seemed to consider the groin a legit target. Striking a downed opponent seemed to be allowed (it wasn’t penalised anyway). Yes, there was at least one monkey stylist I saw who did very well. I’ve written about this before.

There was also a forms competition at the Singaporean comp. and supposedly it was mandatory to compete in it before you were allowed to fight. It didn’t happen that way though.

Overall, the fighting was good but very rough. The organisation at each event I was in was terrible though.
