Fitness fan inspired by kung fu movies to smash finger push ups record
By Echo Zhan Published 11 April 2023

A student inspired by his love of kung fu movies pushed himself to new limits to smash a push ups record.

Zhang Yuxuan (China) is now the proud holder of the Guinness World Records title for most four finger push ups (two arms) with claps in one minute, with a massive 22.

The 21-year-old,who is studying at Shaanxi Aviation Vocational and Technical College, set his sights on a challenge just like this one at a young age.

While his love for kung fu movies was strong, Zhang struggled with his physical fitness and used traditional Chinese medicine in the hope of building up his strength.

At the age of 13, he decided to take matters into his own hands and began training with weights at home and doing push ups, slowly building up both his strength and his confidence.

In his second year of junior high school, he started to attempt the finger push ups he’d seen in kung fu movies, soon managing to do 10 of them in a row.

Zhang said: "I trained myself by watching reference videos and materials online. Soon, I realized that no one seemed to have demonstrated finger push ups while clapping at the same time. This stimulated my desire for the challenge.

“When I was a child, I watched the TV programme Guinness China Night, so I thought a Guinness World Records title should be my goal.”

Although he had planted the seed of the challenge in his heart, Zhang didn’t know where to start.

“At that time, I was in high school. When everyone talked about their dreams, I would always say that I wanted to challenge the Guinness World Records title, but my classmates would always laugh at me, saying I was bragging,” he said.

It wasn’t until March 2022 that Zhang met Zhang Shuang, another Guinness World Records title holder, through social media. Zhang Shuang is a sports blogger who obtained a title for the most consecutive handstand skips, and was kind enough to guide Zhang through the process of getting a GWR title.

Now Zhang is hoping to inspire others to find their own confidence through exercise.

He said: “I recommend everyone to persist in physical exercise. Do not underestimate basic training. Gradually and properly, push ups can be done from a few minutes to one hour. People who enjoy figuring things out can try finger push ups, which also involve the application of physics and pressure knowledge.”

Achieving his dream made Zhang feel particularly happy, and he immediately wanted to share it with everyone, especially his grandmother.

He said: "My grandmother is the most important person in my life. When no one supported me, only she encouraged me. My grandmother is an ordinary farmer, but she taught me many truths. If it weren’t for her support, I wouldn’t have achieved this honour.

“I started dreaming of breaking world records when I was in 8th grade, and it took me seven years to finally achieve it. I remember a saying: Dreams should still be pursued, in case they come true one day. This has been proven true for me.”

Zhang already has big plans to break more records.

“I think I have the ability to challenge records for 1-hour push ups, 3-hour plank, fingertip push ups with weights, handstand walking, and sit ups. Next, I will prepare for these record applications and train seriously, so please look forward to it!”
Those are some crazy single finger moves…

Wish they said the name of this humble peasant farmer…

US Woman, 71, Earns Guinness World Record Title Of Oldest Female Ninja
World’s oldest female ninja: Virginia Lenore MacColl’s favourite moves include swinging on rings and climbing ropes.

Edited by Rahul KumarUpdated: September 23, 2023 5:30 pm IST

Virginia Lenore MacColl started ninja warrior competitions at 66.

New Delhi: In the most recent Guinness World Records (GWR) roundup, a 71-year-old woman from the United States was recognised as the oldest female ninja, proving the adage ‘Age is just a number’ to be completely true. The organisation also released a video showing her navigating obstacle courses filled with a variety of challenges. In the video, she can be seen climbing, jumping, and even swinging from a bar.
“Oldest competitive ninja athlete (female). Competed at the age of 70 years and 90 days,” Guinness World Records said in a video post on Instagram. According to the organisation’s blog, Virginia Lenore MacColl began her journey into ninja warrior competitions at the age of 66, inspired by her daughter’s encouragement to take up sports.

MacColl added that she was motivated to start her journey after watching her daughter, Jessie Graff, participate in American Ninja Warrior.

Ms MacColl said, “While I cheered for my daughter Jessie Graff, I found inspiration in her strength, grace, and health.”

Earlier, she had never participated in athletics or weightlifting. She also mentioned that it took her a while to even consider herself an athlete. However, the 71-year-old found herself committing to four cardio, strength training, and obstacle training sessions each week.

“I engage in cardio through swimming two to three times a week,” she said.

Her favourite ninja moves include swinging on rings and climbing ropes, while she considers the salmon ladder and the warped wall to be some of the trickier techniques.

Speaking about her husband, she said he was her “biggest supporter.” MacColl further mentioned, “Despite being unable to travel for medical reasons, he consistently encourages me to participate in every competition.”

Regarding her exercise routine, she explained that her primary dietary choice is a ‘Mediterranean diet,’ consisting primarily of fish, and vegetables, along with some chicken and turkey. However, she avoids dairy products and soda, and carefully monitors her sugar intake to keep it in check.

A 104-year-old woman has died a little more than a week after she potentially broke the world record for the oldest skydiver.

Dorothy Hoffner jumped 13,500 feet from a plane with Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, Ill., on Oct. 1. She likely died in her sleep Monday at Brookdale Senior Living, the center said.

“The associates at Brookdale Lake View are deeply saddened by the passing of our resident, Dorothy Hoffner,” the statement said. " We were thrilled to see her continue to live with passion and purpose, skydiving earlier this month at 104 and ultimately proving that age is just a number. She will be greatly missed by our entire community."

Guinness World Records is still working to confirm if Hoffner broke the record for the oldest person to jump from a plane. The current record belongs to Linnéa Ingegärd Larsson of Sweden, who was 103 when she made a jump in 2022, The Associated Press reported.

Hoffner made her first jump at the age of 100.

A memorial service for her will be held next month, the AP said.

Grandma of 12 sets new world record with 1,575 pushups

A 59-year-old grandmother has broken a pushup world record, just eight months after she broke the world record for longest plank time by a woman as recognized by the Guinness World Records.

DonnaJean Wilde, who lives in Alberta, Canada, earned her second world record by successfully doing 1,575 pushups in 60 minutes. Wilde, a grandmother of 12, achieved her feat on Sept. 28, but Guinness World Records officially recognized the record last week.

Wilde’s first world record was an abdominal plank held for 4 hours, 30 minutes and 11 seconds, an accomplishment she told Guinness World Records she achieved in part by doing 500 pushups a day.

DonnaJean Wilde set a new world record by successfully completing 1,575 pushups in 60 minutes.
Guinness World Records

“I had to fight back the happy tears and emotions and keep going,” Wilde told Guinness World Records of her 60 minutes of pushups. “I still felt quite strong and I was aiming for a high number of pushups to complete in the next 17 minutes.”

Eleven of Wilde’s 12 grandchildren were on hand to witness their grandmother break the world record again and helped by counting down her sets and shouting encouragements along the way.

The push for a new record didn’t come without its challenges, though. Wilde needed to do the pushups with a 90-degree elbow flex at the bottom of each pushup and also needed to fully extend her arm coming up. During the hour, Wilde’s shoulder even dislocated but popped back in.

Wilde said she encourages others to keep their fitness up, even in their later years.

“I believe that if we stay active and have health and wellness goals, we can age gracefully and powerfully,” Wilde said afterward.

She’s a year younger than me :o

Martial artist declares he’s ‘world’s fastest puncher’ after breaking trio of records

By Emma Salt

Published 24 April 2025

Martial artist, content creator, and all-around powerhouse Joshua Iyalla (UK) has just done the unthinkable.

He broke not one, not two, but THREE Guinness World Records titles for full-extension punches:

  • [B]Most full extension punches in one minute (male)[/B] - 453
  • [B]Most full extension punches wearing boxing gloves in one minute (male)[/B] - 374
  • [B]Most full extension punches in one minute holding 1 kg weights (male)[/B] - 333
“This has been nearly a year in the making,” Joshua beamed. “We trained hard. Twice a day over the last few weeks leading up to it. Total commitment.”

When asked which was his most cherished record out of the three, he said most full extension punches in one minute (male), the title without gloves.

“That was the hardest,” he said, rating his confidence at an 8.5 out of 10. “It pushed me to my absolute limit.”

The gloves record though? “Infinity out of ten,” he jokingly rated his confidence level. “That one was light work.”

The dumbbell record, however, was the real beast. “Six out of 10 confidence. The fatigue in your shoulders is unreal! I’m not some big guy with massive traps. It took everything.”

[IMG2=JSON]{“data-align”:“none”,“data-size”:“full”,“src”:“https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2025/4/images/joshua-punching-a-punchbag.jpg”}[/IMG2]

Despite the insane physical challenge, Joshua didn’t just wing it. He credits his unorthodox but strategic training plan: a combination of old-school grit and high-tech help.

“I actually used ChatGPT to come up with my training plan!” he laughed. “Got it verified by my uncle, who’s a boxing coach. It was a lot of full-extension punches, Tabata intervals, but gladly no cardio!”

The adrenaline rush extended far beyond the gym: “When I found out I broke the record, I literally cried. I danced on the Tube listening to Latin music. People thought I was crazy, but I didn’t care. Cloud nine!”

So, what inspired this record-smashing path? Joshua wanted to show his massive online following, especially young men battling self-doubt, that anything is possible.

[IMG2=JSON]{“data-align”:“none”,“data-size”:“full”,“src”:“https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2025/4/images/joshua-punching-towards-the-camera.jpg”}[/IMG2]

“Martial arts saved me,” he said, reflecting on a journey that started at age seven. “I didn’t want to train growing up. My dad forced me. At 16, something clicked, and I went on to compete for England and became a three-time English Champion in Taekwondo. All because he never let me quit. Love you, Dad.”

He praises inspiration from all around: his brother, his father, even fellow world record holders doing mind-blowing feats like 10,000 pushups in 24 hours. “I thought, ‘If that’s possible, why not my record too?’”

And what did he think parents would say when they found out about the trio of Guinness World Records titles? “My mum’s definitely jumping for joy. Dad? He’s more stoic. Probably like, ‘Well done, Son’, but I know deep down he’s proud.”

[IMG2=JSON]{“data-align”:“none”,“data-size”:“full”,“src”:“https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2025/4/images/joshua-with-certificates.jpg”}[/IMG2]

“[Dad] grew up in Nigeria, worked hard to come to this country and everything that he said he wanted to do, he got done. So yeah, Dad, following in your footsteps.”

Joshua’s advice to anyone considering a record attempt? “If you’re even thinking about doing it, go for it. I didn’t think I could at first. But now? I’m the fastest puncher in the world. Trust me, put your mind to it, lock in, and get it done.”

So, what are you waiting for? Be part of it. Your record-breaking journey might just be a full-extension punch away.

Oh Yohan performed 11,707 pull-ups in a 24-hour period.

Quick Read
Summary is AI-generated, newsroom-reviewed
South Korea’s Oh Yohan has broken the world record for the most pull-ups in a 24-hour period. The military officer performed 11,707 pull-ups in Incheon, South Korea, between September 28-29 last year before being officially listed as the record holder earlier this month.

“After years of training and enduring a demanding 24-hour challenge, he succeeded and proudly dedicated his result to his military unit, which shaped his discipline, strength, and spirit,” the Guinness World Records said in the official release.

Mr Oh could have performed additional reps, but stopped at 11,707 to pay homage to the unit where he served.

“I served in the Republic of Korea 707th Special Mission Group. To honour the number 707, which represents the unit I served in, I finished my pull-up challenge at 11,707,” said Mr Oh.

Prior to his incredible achievement, Mr Oh had broken the record with 8,707 pull-ups, but it was overtaken by another competitor in less than a week. To retake the crown, Mr Oh decided to give another shot but was unsure of taking the final plunge as his wife was due to give birth to their second child.

“My wife was due to give birth to our second child soon, so I hesitated to try again and was afraid to experience the extremes for 24 hours again,” said Mr Oh, adding that he just wanted to get done with the gruelling preparation for the record quickly.

“The preparation process for the second challenge was actually so hard that I wanted to try it quickly, and I didn’t mind failing, so I wanted to escape the pressure of each day. That’s how I ended up trying the Guinness World Record for the second time, and I finally succeeded with a record of 11,707.”

Mr Oh said he got goosebumps after completing the challenge, adding that his main motivation was to prove that South Korean soldiers are also strong.

“I got goosebumps and was so happy when I was officially registered in Guinness. I’m so grateful to all of you who have supported me so far,” he said.

“I wanted to prove that the soldiers of the Republic of Korea are strong, and finally, I achieved my dream that I had been preparing for since I was deployed overseas 22 years ago.”

Social media users were in awe of the strength and mental fortitude displayed by the South Korean soldier and lauded him for the achievement.

“Best pull-ups I’ve seen from anyone attempting this record,” said one user, while another added: “Sore elbows, wrists and tendons. I’m talking about me while watching this.”

A third commented: “I’m guessing people like this have some kind of rare mutation in a leftover set of genes from when our ancestors were tree-dwelling primates, that gives their muscles and tendons some kind of super-human ability?”

This happened last year but it’s getting news now…

Aussie police officer breaks long-standing record by doing over 700 pull ups in an hour

By Vicki Newman

Jade Henderson performing pull ups

An Australian police officer broke a record that had stood for almost a decade when she did the most pull ups in one hour (female).

Jade Henderson completed an unbelievable 733 pull ups – which works out as more than 12 every minute.

She took on the challenge in Gold Coast on 22 August as a way of testing her physical and mental limits.

After beating the record of 725 set by Eva Clarke (Australia) in 2016, she hopes to inspire others to reach their full potential too.

video of: Aussie police officer does the most pull ups in one hour

Jade, 32, told us: “I decided to start training for the pull up world record because I liked the idea of doing something that nobody else has ever done. I also wanted to see what my mind and body were physically capable of.”

Fitness is a huge part of Jade’s life. She’s been competing in Crossfit at a high level for the last eight years and says it’s become an outlet for her when work gets stressful.

Jade had originally planned to take on the 24-hour version of this record, a record currently held by Olivia Vinson (Australia) with a total of 7,079.

But things went wrong.

Jade during her attempt

Jade said: “In April, I did what was supposed to be my last training session before attempting the 24-hour record.

“I did 3,500 pull ups in 12 hours and tore my bicep. I had a partial tear of the bicep tendon and muscle. I had to rest my arm for about six weeks before I was able to do pull ups again.”

It was while recovering that she decided to go for the one-hour title instead in the hope of avoiding another injury.

She went ahead with her attempt about three months later and officially claimed her world record.

And just because it was a much shorter time doesn’t mean it was easy.

Jade hanging off the pull up bar

“I didn’t have a set number that I was aiming for,” Jade confessed. “I knew it was going to be tough to beat the previous record of 725, so I was just aiming to get a couple more reps than that.

“I was really happy with the result. I gave it everything that I had and in that moment I don’t think I could of done any better. With about 20 minutes left to go in the hour, I felt the skin on my hands rip.

“I thought to myself that my hands were already a mess and I was already in pain, so I need to make it worth it. I am proud of myself for pushing through that pain and not stopping until the end.”

Jade said finding out her record was official was a “surreal” moment that still hasn’t quite sunk in.

Jade hanging off the bar with one hand

While she doesn’t have her sights set on any other records just yet, she joked she’d try to do the most pull ups whilst on fire since she’s training to be a stunt performer.

On the advice she’d give to other record hopefuls, she said: “Decide on your goal, come up with a plan and relentlessly work towards achieving that goal every day.

“I made sure that I executed my plan in the lead up to the attempt, so that going into it, I was thinking ‘there’s no way all my work isn’t going to pay off’.

“I also believe that you need to build your mental resilience and need to be doing it for your own personal reasons, not anyone else’s, otherwise you’ll be too tempted to quit when things get hard.

“In the lead up to the attempt I would remind myself of a quote by Theodore Roosevelt on a daily basis – ‘Believe you can and you’re halfway there’.”

> # Martial arts star Fatima set a world record… in heels!

By Vassiliki Bakogianni

Girl kicking balloons

Meet Fatima Naseem, a record-breaking young martial arts star from Pakistan who broke a world record… in style!

Fatima has a black belt and is making a name for herself in the martial arts world at only 12 years old.

Martial arts, such as Karate, Taekwondo and Kung Fu, are fun ways to learn how to move your body and stay strong while doing cool kicks and moves.

On 1 February, in her high heels, Fatima popped 35 ballons in just 1 minute, which earned her the Guinness World Records title for most balloons burst by high-heel kicks above the head in 1 minute.

Here’s what Fatima told us about the experience:

“I have always loved challenging myself and trying something unique. This record inspired me because it requires flexibility, balance, strength, and focus.”

Do you like martial arts?

Of course, popping ballons in heels is a difficult record to achieve even for grown-ups. So Fatima being able to pop 13 more ballons than the previous record holder is quite amazing!

Her secret? Years upon years of training.

“I started martial arts when I was just 3 years old,” Fatima told us. “I was inspired by my father and always wanted to be like him. Watching him train every day made me fall in love with martial arts. It has helped me become more confident, disciplined, and strong.”

You know what’s even more incredible?

This is not even Fatima’s first world record!

girl smashing plates

She also holds the titles of most balloons burst while holding an egg in 30 seconds (both hands), most full contact elbow strikes in one minute using alternate elbows (female) and most splits in one minute (female). She has also earned the titles most knee to elbow steps in 30 seconds and most full extension punches in one minute while holding 2 eggs, but they have since been broken.

“I feel very proud and happy to achieve a Guinness World Records title. It means a lot to me. This achievement has given me more confidence and motivation to work even harder in the future,” Fatima said.

Can you imagine how your friends at school would react if you broke a world record?!

For Fatima, record breaking runs in the family – she is the daughter of Muhammad Rashid, who himself is a serial record breaker!

Muhammad commented: “With passion, discipline, and determination beyond her years, she achieved her first record milestone in 16 August 2020, setting the foundation for an inspiring and powerful career.”

He is very proud of his daughter, and honestly, we all are!

Congratulations, Fatima, you are Officially Amazing.
