ok, what is the secret to staying on your feet when doing a kip up? i can get on my feet and then fall onto my back. can anyone help.
45 degree angle
You are probably trying to go up at too high an angle. Kip up at about 45 degrees.
I’d say you aren’t getting enough power on the “push up”, but then I can’t do kip ups regularly yet myself. But I am working on it!
Anyway, that’s how I feel about it when I fall short of accomplishing it.
Just repeat, repeat, repeat until success.
Get your feet in closer when you land on them.
Very some such, perhaps might have been, likely say some, some not.
i gotta say man, they are a piece of p!ss. just use ur arms as much as possible, and regardless of what that dud said, i think firing your feet up (not straight vertical but i get the picture) is v important.
Dron’t hurt ur neck when ur practicing. Just BIG thrust with ur legs. Are u doing it the “easy” way (legs bent, so u go into a fetal position)or the hard wasy, like in gymnastics? It’s basically the latter half of a neckspring - you keep the legs STRAIGHT and use ur hips and arms to fire urself up. This is much harder.

What the heck is a “Kip up”? ![]()

Kip up
The method of throwing yourself onto your feet when your back is flat on the ground.
METHOD
- Go to an incline such as a small hill to practice.
- Find an incline that is less steep and …
- On the flat earth.
4.5.6. Repeat procedure from the beginning without using your hands.
Final stage.
7. from an upright position jump on your back and kip up.
The ditang wushu people usually do it 3 times in a row in their forms
Flexibility in the hamstrings plays a big roll, seeing as in a Kip Up you are depending a lot on the momentum of your legs to get yourself up and the further distance and faster you move, the better you will do.
An Art is any form of expression or task that has been honed to near perfection.
Have you tried any of the advise mentioned since you started this thread?
Land your feet as close to where your upper back was as you can.~

Just one question. I know when my sifu calls it a kip up… he is trying to say “kick up.” But… its not really called a kip up is it? Or do we all just have asian teachers?? Just curious since my first kung fu teacher was from the Carribean and I said all my forms with a Jamaican accent. =/ I can see how things may get convoluted.
There are 2 ways of kicking up that I have seen:
First, there is the forms/tumbling kick up that moves you forward when performed. It requires you kick your feet forward at 45 degrees and with a whipping motion… pull your body forward. Problems with falling back have to do with a tense/unflexible back or you are kicking too high/low.
Second, is the combat kick up. Rather than kick straight forward you kick straight up above your hips and that LIFTS your body off the ground. You then simultaneously use your arms to push off the ground to rotate yourself on your feet. This should plant your feet almost exactly where your back was. This takes plenty of practice to get used to the force of it. In the beginning you may find yourself landing on your knees and hands but keep it up and it will work well.

“Flexibility in the hamstrings plays a big roll” naw man not really. just relax them.
no_know’s advice is good, think about it.
i think it actually is called kip up. my gym instructor always made me demonstrate it. i found it really easy.

The last peice..if you are getting up and off the floor to your feet but just not staying there…look to your abs. The las item to put your balance over your feet is a final crunch of the abs to raise the body to a point ofer the legs and in line with the ground.
Most people relax the abs to much but kip ups use the arms, the legs, the back and the abs to work well.
thanks everybody
I will try these new tips as soon as I get the chance.
no_know, no i haven’t tried any of the suggetions yet because i first got on today. You see i have been to busy with school and training to get on the internet but i will try them soon.
