What excersises can I do to jump higher?

Jumping rope is a great excersie for strengthening calve muscles. Start slow and work your way up. In about six months of constant jump roping, you should see a good difference in your vertical leap.

Aint nuthin’ to it but to do it.

If you want to jump higher, I reccommend looking for some ads in a sports magazine (Ex. Sports Illustrated) for increasing vertical leap for basketball players. A lot of it may be bunk, but there’s some real gems of info to be learned too. Make sure to do your homework about it, though before you buy.

One method I learnt from someone in highschool who really had good jumping was something called double jumping.

You jump in the air, and in air during your jump you cause your body to try and do another jump. It feels like you are double jumping in a sense, because you are in the air while you are doing this second jump movement, even though you are not propelling your feet from the ground. It takes practice and people will not see it externally but you can see the results of doing it internally.

Also you may try to do side-stepping for the muscles you use to jump. Find a set of stairs, and stand with both feet on one stair, and then step with one foot onto the stair next up from you, and then back down. This works better with something that has a greater vertical distance from one stair to the next, like a low picnic table.

jump up on sh!t.

find a wall or something that you can barely land on. keep jumping up on it until it gets easier and then find something higher.

last summer i was able to verticle leap nearly 4 ft by doing this all the time. well, i guess i couldn’t have lept over a pole at quite that hight but i could land a wall that high. you just got to jump allot. i had 3 differant level walls outside my house to leap on and i would always have a friend hold up a bokun or something for me to jump over. i can still get pretty **** high but i keep losing my balance trying to land that same wall. last time i busted my shin so i havent tried for a bit.

i don’t think iron fist believed me last time i posted this on the work out forum, but i mesured the fu cker and it was 3’’ 9’. not bad for a guy who only stands 5’ 4’'.

Use your feet…

When you jump jump with your feet also, push the ground with them. Try jumping using only the feet and dont bend the knees.
If you go to a ballet school they can show you what i mean.

Do u do Ballet Tvebak?
nah, not gonna pick on ya.

On the jumping, I find that jumping with your both feet as high as u can and with NO rest Jump again as ****ing high as u can. Do this until u simple cant jump anymore coz your to tired. Then do it again next day.
Believe me this works great.

I have done some ballet, part of the cirkusschool i was at, boring and painfull…hated it.
But i did learn a few usefull thing from it…ok one usefull thing.

Working out your legs always helped me.

Also, try jumping with ankle weights on.I do my M.A. work out with them on about once a week and I notice it makes me faster. It might help you with your jumping.

remember to get your amrs into it too if you can.

also, this may be just me, but i always feel my best jumps in my abs more than my legs so i try to focus there more than anything.

here’s one from volley ball, face a wall with hands stretched above your head.Spring off your toes and touch a point on the wall with your fingertips(in genreral above the height of a comp net)keep rebounding to that point for 30 reps rapidly.Do 5 sets .It works.

Increase your jump

I played basket ball, and we did a lot of drills to increase all of our skills. Here are a few to increase your jumping ability: 1) goto a basketball hoop and practice jumping straight up and touching the backboard with as little stopping time as possible. Do this for one minute and increase the time little by little (not more than 5 or 10 minutes). 2) Skip for distance at a court, football field, track, etc. 3) Skip for heighth, same as above. 4) Strengthen your legs by doing leg extensions, leg curls (keep them within 75%-60% of each other I believe), and do calf raises. 5) Sprints…do a 100 meter sprint, do a 100 meter jog, do a 100 meter sprint, do a 100 meter jog for a total of 800 meters (might want to work up to this depending upon your own physical condition). 6) Back to different stuff, do two legged hops across a court, field, etc. for heighth and then distance. 7) Do the same single legged…CAREFUL, basketball players sometimes destroy their knees…check out the NBA injured list (ouch). You should be stretching and going at your pace.
I don’t recommend doing all of this in one day or even all of it in one week, just some ideas. Vary up your program every once in a while to shock your muscles. There are some jumping shoes you can buy that have no heel (none) the idea is to strengthen your calves (and your sense of balance). I only knew of one guy to do this. He had great improvements BUT he was a natural athlete.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck
Peace.

The first part of learning to jump higher is learning how to safely drop. So before you ever jump up you should first jump from things, start low and gradually increase the height, and before you know it you’ll be jumping off of 11 story buildings like my master, Iron Kim.

Now you’ll be able to handle any height that you can jump.

GDA, alright, I believe you. That’s an insane vertical jump!!!

I don’t think calf muscles are really involved in jumping that much. Old Chinese texts supposedly tell of a jumping method in which training involves binding the knees to force the calves to work, and the masters of such a method could supposedly jump over buildings and stuff, but I dunno. Personally I think the quads are more responsible, as well as momentum gained from the rest of the body.

Consider the fact that many large Olympic lifters have HUGE vertical jumps, most likely from all the explosive strength gained from their type of lifting.

I also think there’s an article on increasing one’s vertical jump over at Fred Hatfield’s site www.drsquat.com.

Good luck!
