Is there similarity between beng ch’uan and wing chun battle punches, which are taught usually whith luk bun dim gwun or with jik chung choy? Why or why not? Try to be as specific as possible please.
interesting question only from the perspective of how you see the two similiar ???
pick one area as you see as a simiularity and we’ll go from there.
Beng
I do not know wing chun battle punches but; remember that beng quan, like all the other elements, is not a punch, application or “move”, it is an expression of an element,in this case wood.So therefore 2 bengs to the untrained eye may look physically different and be seemingly different strikes but when you understand that it is an expression of wood in both cases even though they may appear different, you see that they are the same thing. Also,In Xingyi, Beng (Wood) can create fire, so Beng Quan creates Pao Quan. According to the principles of Mutual creation and Desruction, Beng Quan destroys Heng Quan (earth).
Are wing chun battle punches expressions of an element or are they a set way of striking?do they lead to the creation and destruction of other elements?
from total beginner…
Yes you can draw comparisons seeing as they are both executed with vertical rolling centre line punches, but xingyi’s punches seem to me far more sophisticated and powerful from the beginning. I’m sure there’s a similar quality in wing chun punches, it’s just that xingyi emphasizes it from the word go. Plusxingyi also pays attention to the rest of the body when executing its “battle punches” Beng is crushing. There’s a slight sinking, downward quality to it. fantastic stuff this xingyi…
There always seems to be the opinion on wing chun punches that they are weak, due tot he fact that most people(like in all martial arts) never get past the begionning stages, or mistake training exercises for technique. Wing Chun punches are thrown utilizing whole body connection and converging force. As far as flowing to one element or the other, the following technique is totally dependant upon the reaction or energy of the opponent’s bridges. Please go on…
Are wing chun battle punches expressions of an element or are they a set way of striking?
I have never heard any Wing Chun people discuss the application of 5 element theory explicitly. But I have seen and felt the cycles applied.
Yet another example of Wing Chun’s feminine guile; we knew this stuff all along, but we never told you. ![]()
i really wish i could answer better but im limited in the sence i have never fought or trained in wing chun.If you can explain the wing chun punches to me so i can understand them , then i could give a better answer as far as their comparison to xingyiquan
ok, from a physical perspective ( basically already said ) they look alike, however when using beng- mok kuen - the principle of squeezing is used, both from the body and the fist and again luk hu ba faht and thread ripping is important throughout the movement, i don’t see this in wing chun battle kuen.
ten - since you do hung kuen, the hung kuen mok kuen is similiar in concept to xing yi in that the ging is similiar but to where in hung kuen it is held ging, in the xing yi it is release ging. again depending on which xing yi you do ( there are different family ) depends on how you do the concept, however all families follow the main principle as stated.
it is true that the movement is through the element, however there are two concepts of element usage. one is the destructive/creative concept the other is the fighting concept, they differ in principle to some extent.
further more xing yi works on the theory of spear, it is intrinsic within the foundation of the art.
the veiw of wing chun though having weak kuen is mainly due to a change in training stucture that has happened over the last 10 - 15 yrs going back fruther though and especially in the 50’s and 60’s the gung kiu sau was very important to wing chun. these days unfortunaitly to a change in the way the world works, most don’t have the time to train on this factor.
if you cross hands with a trained wing chun gung kiu sau you will feel good ging
