How do the Wing Chun rings work?

Are they used to srengthen forearms? how are they used?

Thanks

The object is not to hurt someone else, but to stop them from hurting you

Martial Joe-

Could you elaborate on that lengthy reply above for us wing chun newbies?

Peace!

“He’s on the jazz.”

If your doing your SLT properly you are working the energy.

With those rings on that weigh 5 pounds each I think, will help you train your body how to move your energy foward properly and dont forget about the relaxation, you need to be relaxed and training with that correctly helps.

I am also a newbie…

The main lines of Yip Man wing chun do NOT use
rings for training- brass, rattan or otherwise.
There is enough to do in Yip man wing chun without rings.Mokujin- I will send you a note tomorrow.

Apparently, there is a picture that exists of Yip Man training with the rings.

WH beat me to it…

Yip Man used the rings…how often you ask?

wing chun ring

I’ve seen a photo of Yip Man training with the rings. I don’t know how it is used in the Yip Man style. We also train with wing chun rings in our system. But it is different with that of Yip Man.

In our system, we use only one ring which is about 10 to 12 inches in diameter (depending on the size of the practitioner). Both hands are placed inside the ring. The wrists are in contact with the ring. Then roll your arms just like when performing parallel hand chi sao. Enough and constant pressure should be applied in the rings so that it will not slip. This exercise trains the correct application of energy.

The rings were not used in Yip Man’s wing chun
teaching. Tsui Tsong tin, Wong shon leung, ho kam ming etc did not pass on ring work from Yip Man.Someone had given him a gift of the rings
and took his picture with them. Strange how people jump to conclusions.

Apparently it was Bruce Lee who gave Yip Man the rings…

I think fei jei is right. Lord Bruce was good for a photo op now and then! Too bad he didnt catch YM picking on his nose—folks would have an interpretation of the move… and you could generate an entire literature on it<g>

I think the rings will train strength and all, but it appears that using the rings will train a sideways pressure instead of a forwards pressure.

which at least for my lineage of WT is not emphasized.

The picture of Yip Man sifu doing Tan Sao with brass ring(s) is in one of John Little’s Bruce Lee books, and I believe it states Lee recommended them to Yip sifu. Since they, as Joy pointed out, aren’t found in the Yip Man system, it doesn’t appear Yip sifu adopted them or passed them on.

The Teng Huen (Rattan Ring) is also not found in Yip Man’s system but is found in some mainland lineages. In those lineages, however, it’s not used for any kind of rolling exercise (where force should be projected towards an opponent’s center). Some lineages have even developed 108 or other long-series linking sets.

points taken.

>Enough and constant pressure should be applied in the rings so that it will not slip.<

Wouldn’t this train your hands to forget foward
intent and cause your hands/arms to open center??

I’m thinking of the Randy Williams ring
