Is Hop Gar (aka Ape and Crane) anything like Choy Lay Fut? It seems like they might look a lot although I’ve never seen Hop Gar. It seems like an Ape would have large swinging arm movements and the crane would have deceptive foot work…sounds a lot like Choy Lay Fut.
Also, what does Hop mean, does it refer to the Hop family?

“If you are talking about sport that is one thing. But when you are talking about combat-as it is-well then, baby, you’d better train every part of your body” - Bruce Lee
Lama Crane is hard crane style, also called Hop Gar. It is known for it’s boxing skills and triangler stepping. Very aggresive style always retreating forward. They have some very unique training methods like lama blocks which are great for upper body and power developement. You might check out Wah Lun Choi’s website. He teaches Liu Ho Pa Fa, Bagua, Hsing I and Lama Pai in Chicago. I’m not sure how good the website is but it might get you started.
You should do some research yourself before telling someone their wrong.
Hop Gar, Lama Pai and Bak Hok Pai (White Crane) all originated from Tibet (at the time part of China). Hop Gar and Lama Pai are basically the same style and share the same history both mentioning the monk Sing Lung and Wong Yan Lum. White Crane is also close to and related with the other two.
I am not sure of the order of which came first but it is quite similar to the relationship between Hung Gar, Sam Chien and Hung Fut, as well as Pak Mei, Lung Ying and Yau Kung Mun.
