Helping a student?

Here’s my question. One guy I practice with is a very athletic person, a good student, and his form is getting decent. However, he is working on sparring, and he is concentrating on moves he likes, but does not yet understand, and neglecting moves that he actually excels at. I don’t think I should tell him how to fight, but he could use some help in piecing together his style, as right now he is only working on really complicated stuff, with no quick simple stuff to fill the gaps.

What’s your advice?

Try talking to him, but ultimately he has to learn for himself.

You could try to do it in the form of a compliment, since you said he’s not using what he excells at, you could say something like “your insert cool move here is really great you should use it more”

Free thinkers are dangerous!

well its tough but since youre not the teacher its best not to interfere because most guy sare pretty ratty when you try to tell them sometihng as they think they know it all. but its common in th ebeggining everyone wants to do double kicks and fly around soon he’ll grow out of it…

what do bin laden and general custer have in common???

One thing you can do is to show him how his cool techniques are not as good as the techniques he excels at by wiping him out every time he uses one of his cool techniques.

everytime you see him neglecting “the gap”, hit him in the head. He’ll soon understand.

All i wanted was some RICE CAKES! Now? WE MUST BATTLE.

Damn you, we are too similar.

Why shouldnt he say something just because he’s not the teacher? I think senior students should eb expected to point out things to students with less experience, the teacher cant do EVERYTHING in class and if the senior students are fairly sure they are giving good advice i say go for it.

Thanks everyone(especially those who guessed I was a senior student. I guess I must appear to know something.) I’ll probably hype up the moves he’s good at and see how that works.

As I tell all my students…you are your best teacher… I can show you how to correctly do every technique I know, but only you can learn them
kind like leading the horse to water saying..
it works very well and gives them a sense of independence and self confidence…

KISS

Emphasize to him the KISS principle (keep it simple stupid) stress in accuall combat it may be easier/more effective at this point for him to use less complex moves, and that no matter how complex things get, the KISS moves will just get better and better along with the rest of the things you practice.

so a bunch of people crowd around you and the tough guy comes up and says, ‘I heard you were one of those taiji ninnies. How about you show me some of your taiji now.’ at which point you kick him in the groin, showing off the KISS posture. Kicking Is Simple Stupid.

Or you could KISS him - that would turn off just about any thug
