–depends. i’ve seen a set run & take up a very large area & seen the same set done w/in a very small area.
–lineage - geographic location, have an influence. so does personal expression of movement. might b determined by necessity, or intent, defined as u will.
–wing chun is possibly an exception. ask yuan fen, much as i bust on him, he is a good rep 4 his pai.
–some families of bagua (lumped in2 northern branch) don’t use much room, very small diameter circle, their linear sets can cover a lot of ground.
–the sets of real kwongsai jook lum tong long are sometimes run in a very small area, box of 'bout 1 1/2 strides in all 4 directions.
–floating root might b another cause of more space used in some northern styles.

Yes, generally speaking I’d say that Southern styles take up less space. Generally because the stances are not as wide and there is less jumping around.
