Cantonese is spoken often in Southern China like Hong Kong and Macao, but I’m not sure about this particular place that you are talking about. You should check it up somewhere - a traveller’s guide or something

Country of Babel

I’ll check it up. But i’ll tell you right now it’ll be called “Kun-Ming-hua” Kunming dialect. The dialect is different in every city, yes that’s right, every city. However some cities are mutually intelligible, or there is an area of similar dialects. But with Yunnan you are looking at many minorities as well.
No, it certainly won’t be Guangdong dialect, or a variant of Cantonese.
Do yourself a favour and learn only Mandarin. That will get you by everywhere, although with a lot of frustration as you discover that with even mandarin everybody speaks it differently.
The only people that speack correct and perfect Mandarin are foreign Scholars!!!

agreed-more than 70% of all chinese speak the northern dialect - putonghua- or “common speech”, this is what the mandarin language is.

many who speak cantonese speak this also.
cantonese has more slang and colloquialisms.

it is good to note that no matter what the dialect, the written language is the same where ever you go.
