This seems to be a hot topic at the moment. What is the deal with these guys who chain punch 10-20-30 times to finish their opponents? If you are one of these people can you explain to me why you need to hit someone so many times?
Its my opinion that you shouldnt have to hit someone more then 5 times, and thats with the benefit of the doubt! Really three hits should be more then enough, especially to the head!
Where is the power if you have to hit someone that much?! Maybe thats what you should be looking at?

i remember reading one article awhile back about punching… i think the person being quoted was wong shun leung. basically he said that all you should need to knock someone out is two punches. one will knock their brain to the front of their skull, and the second will do the knock-out.

the ol’ one two 🙂

i dont know how accurate it is, but it seems to make some sense

personally, wing chun is about ending the fight as quick as possible. throwing 298374983274 punches at someone isnt ending the fight quick now is it?

Yep TjD, I agree, and I think it looks silly besides! Throwing all those punches like that! Makes you wonder what those guys think of their punching?!

Chainpunching is about finding a line and staying on it, because if your hand is in contact with the opponent, then you already have established the most effecient and quickest route to your opponent, and it is open, because you occupy it. Chainpunching is a principle, not a technique, you dont throw chain punches, you throw a punch, and because it landed, you attack down the same line.

I have seen and heard it demonstrated and advocated to ‘chainpunch your opponent’. Thats silly.

I also tend to doubt that anyone who really advocates ‘just one or two or three punches’ is living in reality. But there are some really high level people out there,…

Thats the key Yenhoi, high level, chain punching in my opinion is for low level stuff. Shouldn’t everyone be pushing for that higher level skill?

I couldent disagree more that chainpunching is not high level. Its a principle. I couldent imagine why, if you have a open line and a bridge, you would choose to hit on another line. If you have hit your opponent, and he is falling or dead or asleep, then you obviously dont have the line anymore so why would you throw another strike?

Centerline theory, elbow power, and softness then are all low level as well, and why should you worry about them when you can just punch your opponent once really hard at just the right time to win. That is improbable no matter what your skill level is. Not that it cant happen, or cant be done, but not consistently, and is not something you can truely practice.

“Centerline theory, elbow power, and softness then are all low level as well”

I would disagree here, I dont think they are necessarily along the same lines. Chain Punching may use those ideas but I still believe it to be a low level technique.
I dont think the point of chain punching is to dril your opponent with 30-40 little girl slaps but to get in those 2-3 shots that are going to count. You are right about having the avenue and using it, but excessive use is. Its too comittal and hitting someone that many times is just plain slppy. If you have to do that then you just arent getting that centerline theory, elbow power, softness, hence the reason I believe they are not low level ideas. 😉

do you think 2 or 3 good quality, fast, powerful chain punches are low level too?

actually why do you think chain punching in general is low level?

Chain punching to me is a low level techinique for the reasons I have been stating, too committal, too excessive if done too much. 2-3 should be all it takes, if it takes more then why is that?

Theory and practice can be very different sometimes. In a real fight ,it is sometimes not that easy to connect a good punch and little backward movements of the head can rob the punch of a big percentage of it’s power.I believe it is good to follow though with a technique if there is a bridge and an oppening to profit from.It is normal that two or even three hard connected punches to the same target should be very effective even against almost anybody but why not continue until the guy fall or is knocked out?
As long as it is not used as we see it sometimes when they start to punch out of range in the hope of backing off the opponent. There is a big expending of energy in doing that!..Very bad in a real situation.

Chain punching is a combinaison of the same technique! Like the boxer who jab repeately. It can be good in some situations if there is a good opportunity but I think it is a bad idea to relie on this thing as a strategy.
Better to keep this as a stamina drill.

So taking and keeping the opponent’s center with an offensive weapon is too committing?

Too excessive? Are you going to stop fighting to see if the opponent is OK? If you are in a fight, it is all about surviving, not looking pretty or worrying about whether your Wing Chun is in perfect technique.

I would think that if you stop after three punches to see if it did the job, you open a possibility for the opponent to gain the offensive. Who cares if you use 1 punch or 30 as long as you take away their ability to cause you or someone else harm.

Besides, how do you know that your three punches will take the opponent out? Do you have a volunteer taking your best punches to test whether or not you have the power, speed and accuracy to knock them unconscious?

How about the opponent who is so strung out on drugs that they can take more of a punishment then usual? Will your punches still be as effective?

I personally train to try and eliminate the opponent with one punch, but I am not too proud to use 30 if necessary.

Kevin

Well, seeing as your about as low level a wing chun practicioner as there is red, maybe you should stick to one or two punches then just run before you get hurt by an attacker…

No, because after three punches, if I am doing it right, have trained properly, then I wont have to worry about them returning anything.
Who cares? You should, if it takes more then a couple, you are wasting energy and doing it wrong. We dont like to waste energy in Wing chun do we?

“Besides, how do you know that your three punches will take the opponent out? Do you have a volunteer taking your best punches to test whether or not you have the power, speed and accuracy to knock them unconscious?”

do you have a volunteer taking 30 punches to see if ti works? how do you know if what you are doing works?

Perhaps after 3 punches that have no effect on the opposition, other than p$$ng them off, at that point it might be worth trying something different!? At the very least change where you’re punching (and who you’re taking lessons from!)
