BJJ - questions

Hey guys,

I’m moving this question from another thread I started.
Now that I’ve decided to venture into the world of grappling, I’m wondering what your opinions are on a couple of things:

In terms of learning BJJ, would you learn by the way of private lessons or by group lessons? For instance, if you could learn at the Gracie Academy, would you go with the privates or the group classes?

Also, if you could choose to study at any one school of BJJ in So.Cal, where and who would it be with.

Later,
Loke

I’m seeing a blank profile. Lock and load team we’re moving to Troll-Con-5 already!

And Loke, you just need the Gracie “Yank-at-home” Cd-Rom, available from all good bookstores.

BTW: If you’re not a troll, I apologise. We’re just mighty suspicious in these here waters.

If you are just the Spawn of Ralek reincarnated again, then its time for us to put this dead horse down.

Again.

Oops! I read your other thread - sorry mate!! I just get VERY suspicious of Bjj gys with blank profiles.

Anyway, I’d go for group-lessons, one-on-one is very pricey, and not really worth it until you get very good IMHO. Also, with group lessons you get to fight all kinds of people, tall, short, heavier, lighter, and to experience a more diverse range of techniques.

As for So.Cal, I can’t help I’m afraid. As my first post on here proved, I’m just a dumb 17 year old punk from the UK!

DS,

I’m not a troll. If you read the thread “1st taste of BJJ, and a question”, you’d see my info.

I just moved to So. California (I now work in Cypress, a little south of LA), and was wondering about the BJJ schools.

I took a intro lesson the other day and have decided to learn BJJ, but haven’t decided on which school. So, I’m just wondering if anyone can give me recommendations.

If it came out as a troll post I apologize.

LOL @ this being a better BJJ board than a CMA board.

Rickson Gracie lives in los angelos. He is the best of the Gracie’s. He is in his 40’s but he is still better than the younger gracies like Rodrigo and Ryan. But it doesn’t have to be Rickson. Fabio Gurgel is also really good. Just about any BJJ school you go to will be good. BJJ has not yet been McDojoed so you are safe at pretty much any school. But Rickson would definatly be the best. But it might cost more. I don’t know.

I don’t go to a BJJ school becuase all the BJJ schools are in Washington DC and that’s too far away for me. So i just use the Gracie CD-ROM™. The CD-ROM has Royce and Rorion on it.

Rickson Gracie vs. Kimura. Rickson Chokes out Kimura. And he does a flying jump takedown defense. Rickson is the man. In the dressing room Royler could not believe Rickson’s takedown defense. He asked Rickson “Did you think he was going to throw you”. Only Rickson could pull that off.

Rickson has defeated David Levicki a huge 6’9’’ 300+ pound Wing Chun kung fu fighter. Dispite Ricksons size and strength disadvantage he easily took Levicki down and beat him proving once again that kung fu does not work even if the kung fu guy is bigger and stronger.

Ralek

I thought this screen name was gone and you moved on to a new one

I only change my name when i’m banned. If i could have my way i would still be using my original name Rolls.

Group lessons are better becouse you gain the experience of rolling with other people other than the instructor.

Just a question.

Why posting in a Kung Fu forum when all you want to talk about is BJJ ?..
There are lots of BJJ places around!..Just asking.

You might wanna try asking on www.mma.tv it’s free to sign up. You there’s a BJJ board there, plus the normal underground board could propably help you (you’d propably get less trolling from the BJJ board though).

You ever see a doctor about that sprained wrist Josh?

Loke,
Go with the group lessions to get the basics down first, then after you have a good understanding of the basics (close guard, open guard, side control, mount, north-south etc) then take a few privates. It just seems like a poor idea to pay a hundred dollars or more for an hour to learn something pretty basic, that you’ll be learning anyway. Wait at least 3 to 6 months then take a few privates. Another way to go is to take privates from one of the advanced students at your school, it would be a lot cheaper. Good luck bro.-ED

GSD,
Thanks for your suggestion. I may go check out Caique’s school as it’s not too far from my office.

Sorry for taking up the bandwidth on a KF board…
