While Watching Pride 7 Bas said about one of the competitors, that he should cross face him. I know most ground fighting terms, but not that one. What does it mean?
I’m sure you could find some good answers to you question there.Thanks.
Actually it’s a wrestling technique, it’s mainly used to defend leg takedowns. It’s basically performed just how it sounds:
a) An opponent shoots a double leg with his head on your right hip
b) You sprawl
c) He keeps driving so you place your right fore-arm across his face and grab his left tri-cep
d) You crank it until he stops
There are different variations of course, it can be used against a single leg, bear hug, firemans. Hope this helps.
I know it’s none of my business…
…But, if the guy is kind enough to put his head on my side, I would be tempted very much to apply a guillotine choke. After, I would certainly insert a needle in the back of his neck with my teeth to finish him! ![]()
A guillotine is definately another option, however it’s difficult to use effectively after you’ve sprawled since your center of gravity is thrust backward. I would probably go for a guillotine if I couldn’t get the sprawl and was on my way down or if I was driven into a fence or wall and was still stationary.
X face vs. guillotine vs. w hi z zer
The cross face is most commonly used when the opponent is on all fours and you want to break him down. It is also very effective against a bad single leg when the opponent has made a mistake and his head is on the outside.
The guillotine and the w h i z zer (can’t say that word here) are probably the most commonly used follow ups to the double leg. The guillotine is more popular in MMA and submission grappling, but is illegal in free style and folk style wresting, so the w hi z zer is the follow up of choice.
Ah, the crossface.
Sort of what knife fighter said. I’m a crossface fan on any shot after the sprawl, lots of different ways to get there. I like to use it in conjunction with the wizzer.
KF, do you really think the guillotine is a preferred defense to the shot? I kind of find that it’s more of a “Gee, thanks for the present.” That is, you can only really get it if they don’t have their chin ticked and their head glued to the body properly.
Just asking the question ![]()
yes, but you need to make sure to practice against a resisting opponent in a dynamic environment.![]()
Everyone is correct except for Old Jong.
His suggestions would get you life in prison!![]()
Paul,
Quit hounding me!!!

Yes that was the situation. Thank you.

Absolutely. Right after the sprawl. I also think this is the biggest downside to the double leg if your opponent has a good sprawl.
I disagree with Archangel. I think it is the perfect follow up to a good sprawl. Unless your opponent is working good hand control on the bottom, you can really start working his neck when you have a good sprawl and are spread back with your weight on top. In my last fight, my opponent was shooting doubles and opening himself up for the guillotine. I didn’t catch him because my sprawls weren’t deep enough.

I think that’s probably the best place to work the xface.
I’m going with KnifeFighter on this one. I like the guillotine off the sprawl as well. Actually, I like to try and “bounce” the guy if when he shoots, but if I miss and get the sprawl, Guillotine for sure.
Huh. Interesting.
I mean, I’ll continue to use it since there is always the chance you can get it.
Guess I just need to work on my guillotine ![]()
Hmmmmm, I really don’t know about this guys. The problems with the guillotine after the sprawl is that you have to bring your hips back in again to apply pressure to the choke. I worked so hard to sprawl, why would I bring my legs back in and risk being put on my back. I’d much prefer to cross-face, bring the guy down and work from there.
Why not simpwy put on the guiwwotine and wet the guy faww into youw guawd?..Hey!..Now you got me talking like Elmer fudd!..

D@MNIT!
I only know a few things, and I used to use the guillotine almost exclusively when I sprawled. Mostly becuase my wh!zzer was always iffy for me. But my guillotine never worked like it should. Often I would still get run over and loose my grip. Sometimes I would even get picked up and dropped while I had my guillotine sunk in.
Then, Merryprankster gave me some suggestions on the wh!zzer and I started using it instead with allot of success. And I’ve been quite happy with it.
Now, I don’t know what the fu(k to do.
D@mn, I’ve got it get to a regular grappling class.

Eh, just do what works for you. I don’t do every move in the book! ![]()
When you get the guillotine in, drop to both knees and then kick your feet back. You’ll end up in a funky looking North-South position.
Jong, if you’d take those needles out of your mouth, you’s be able to talk normally.
Oh, one more thing. MerryPrankster is correct.
