Attn: IronFist

In a previous post you stated that you do not recomend a 15 year old to lift weights.

My questions are :

1)At what age do you consider optimal to start lifting weights.

2)What do you think about body weight excercises for a teen?

3)Calisthenics , Yes or no for teens?

  1. What are the adverse effects of weight training on a developing (teen) body?

I would think that weight training would be benificial to developing Muscle bones and tendons.

I’m interested in your feed back.

Thanks in advance.

Young start

Alot of people say its bad to statrt lifting when young, but it depends how you train, going to the gymtwice a week and curling 4-5kgs wont hurt your brother, but keep heavy weights down as it may cause cartilage problems, i am 17 and have been training for 4 years, but my farther is a BB and he has kept me in check so i do not hurt myself or damage my poor body.
Push ups, chin ups, sit ups, dips will be great for your bro as they are natural and will develop his body for later intense weights when he gets 16+.

But serious training should be kept to over 18s unless you receive expert guidance.

I don’t do big time weights, and my new plan is to go relatively low weight, righ reps. I am 15 but I am pretty sure I am done growing height wise. All that’s left is to fill out, which I hopes come sooner than later because I am one scrawny mofo.

Don’t Misinterpret

Ironfist didn’t say not to weight train. Just not to train with max intensity. So no heavy lifts. There is a good reason for this. If you are young and growing weight lifting heavy will cause stress on your joints which are newly growing each day…and the added muscle buildup around your joints can stunt your growth. Not to mention injuries that kids always get into because they haven’t learned the proper respect for the weight they are lifting.

My recommendation…if you’re 15 or 16 play sports, chase girls, and lift if you have to a couple times per week maybe at 60% of your max weight. Don’t do any weight you couldn’t lift 8 times on your last set.

When you are 18-20 your growth spurt is pretty much over…sure you’ll grow for 5 more years but marginally so it’s safer to increase your intensity. Hopefully this clarifies things for you and will allow Ironfist to just say “ditto” instead of having to type all this stuff out.

ditto

Thanks ElPietro, I’ve got a bunch of projects right now so you saved me some time by typing all that out

Johnny I’ll post more tomorrow when I’m done with all this work.
