I can’t remember for sure, but I remember you talking about Vunak’s RAT program before…what is your martial art? Are you a JKDC player?

It’s weird that you brought that up as I was going to ask you the same thing as we seem to have a similar background in how we like to fight.
You stressing the ground skills a bit more than me though:D
I was a JKDC player and I really like the training but the last school I was with brought me to the point where I found myself becoming tired of the political and anti-traditional/what is acceptable propaganda that was going around from a teacher whose only system was JKDC, not to mention the commericalisim that was becoming more and more apart of the school.
An example was the introduction of Kino Mutai as if that would solve everybody’s problems because Paul said so and on his push to put martial tapes out on the market place for stuff that has already been done before and done better.
Which is weird coming from a me, a guy who also has some problems with what I see in a lot of so-called traditional schools.
The same going for the JKDC school before that but to a much lesser degree though it was still their.
My own methods have always been mixed but with a western flavor and point of interest. I am now taking that point of interest to where I find it works the best for me as I have come across a few teachers who give me acess to what I enjoy both in terms of simple combative effectiveness and historical joy.
I am “hopefully” also going to be starting up my Bando training again as that has always been a passion of mine, something that has become a pipe dream on more than one occasion because of things beyong my control, we will see this time.
I would say my approach is flavored by JKDC, Western Combatives, Boxing, Chi Dao Ch’uan Gung Fu, a bit of Arnis and Bando as well as anything else that I find fitting.
As I get going with a group again on a consistent basis I hope to streamline, tighten up and reinforce my stuff again. Except for the Bando training which is taken from a traditional approach.
One thing I need is more ground work but that will come soon.
I know exactly what you mean.
The commercialization and political dogma from the JKD (and even JKDC ) camps made me unwilling to even call what I was doing JKDC. Especially because I do focus more on the ground skills, body locks, etc. It’s almost like I can no longer be doing “JKDC” because I don’t straightblast.
Though I’m sure Bruce would not say such a thing.
I practice a little kino mutai now (if you can really call it anything other than the natural instinct to bite) and used it in a real fight before with good results (though not spectacular). It’s definitely not a “problem solver” for grappling! Hope it’s not being portrayed as that. It only works well when you know your ground game. But unfortunately, some people want to be “Uncle Voo” so bad that they stop looking for their own experiences. Not really “finding the cause of their own ignorance” are they? ![]()
Anyway that’s cool. Good luck and keep training! I’ll probably ask some tecnical questions in the future since you do share a similar training strategy.
Take care
Ryu
I also noticed that SOME of the JKDC people are very quick to just downplay traditional styles just for the sake of downplaying. When there is no need to put your opinion somewhere it comes off pretty stupid.
And as far as the JKD original people…well everyone probably saw what happened between me and one of the leading guys of that camp on this very board. ![]()
Sigh…
