any internet/pc experts out there?

coz i got a problem :frowning:

well 1st of all the university seems to have shut off their main server yesterday so i cant connect (for free) to the internet. So right now im using my dial up and using another isp.

BUT i have no idea whats happening, things seem to be connecting really slow. MSN, icq and yahoo etc. dont even seem to be working, and neither does Wens chatroom :frowning: So i have no contact with the outside world LOL

whats worse is also that even my IE doesnt seem to be working properly, and i have to keep refreshing a page around 5 times before it actually loads…

now i have no idea whats up with that? do any of u?

i thought it may have been that somehow java got disabled and stuff, but it shouldnt be as i havent changed anything since before.

the main reason its a problem is because i have to do a crud lod of research for a 10 000 word dissertation, and my reason for staying at uni and not going home was to do it (apart form being poor). But i cant now :(

so its really puzzling me?
if anyone can htink of anything or knows anything then thanks a lot!

What OS are you using?

When you were connected through the university to you have to enter any proxy information? or set static DNS numbers?

Have you got a firewall?

If so hardware or software?

If ya like PM me I can try to help ya out

thanks for the help

im using windows 2000 pro

didnt have to use a proxy but have 2 dsn numbers

also needed a ppp connection script so i could log on to the network.

now i am using a dial up i am using a different dial up profile so these shouldnt affect it. (it also worked before just fine).

the thing is i havent changed anything since i set it up, so have no idea whats just happened

**** i must sound like one of the hundreds of scared/nervous clients u have each day

when you try to connect to the messenger programs does it just time out or give a specific error?

hi

icq gives a specific error (error code 5, error category 4)

msn just gives the standard error message and doesnt connect. OR sometimes it connects for a short while though then screws up (yet acts like im still connected).

yahoo just doesnt connect.

np for the help

have you tried removing the dns and setting the machine to auto obtain dns info?

on the isp account i am using now its already been set to automatic for the ip address and dns server address :frowning:

I talked with a couple of buddys at the office and they are leaning towards possible viral infection or spyware.

Do you run any filesharing proggies?

no filesharing progs, and i have done all the usual stuff like only opening emails i know etc. even when chatting i have only chat to people i know, but did go in to a chatroom for a short while (on yahoo) so maybe someone did something then? :frowning:

now i cant even connect thru yahoo chat to a chatroom.

but it only seemed to start happening when i was online the other day and my modem disconnected… that was when the uni decided to switch off their server (as far as i can guess as the uni is closed).

this is bad news :frowning:

the only other thing i can think of was that i downloaded a small piece of software that lets you make your own screensavers using pics from http://www.webshots.com which seems reputable etc.

thanks for your advice anyway

dawood

Webshots is the culprit!!

ok go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download a program called adaware 5.83

After it dls run it and anything it detects remove, that should solve the problem.

I’ve seen webshots bbq systems before, small problem fairly easy fix.

Cheers,

Any questions msg me.

thanks for the help - i bet im the customer from the furthest away u ever had to deal with?

i d/l the software and will run it. hopefully things will get fixed.

thanks again

d@mn not done scanning yet and 19 identified files :frowning:

dawood

are they registry keys?

i pressed a wrong button and have to scan again but they all seemed to be cookies and stuff like that…

should be done soon

dawood

there seems to be 1 registry key listed as well, but all the cookies and stuff are gone.

hopefully this will take care of them all… thanks for your help i may yet be able to get this essay done lol

dawood

anytime

spayware is bullsh!t.

i run an xp 2000 (ocd to 1.75) with 512 ddr and that sh it has managed to bog me down on occasion. adaware is a great util … a must have these days,.

dunno what any of that meant GDA

does anyone know anywhere i can d/l any good virus software? coz i had to reinstall everything a few weeks ago and i used a copy of my mates but hes gone now :frowning:

things seem to be a bit faster now on IE but i still dont seem to be able to connect to any chat software or wens forum (java) chatroom :frowning:

dawood

All too bad mate.
All I can really do is brag about it with the flow and hope it´s going to work out (Hopefully you will be able to afford new software soon   )

I´d still have to wonder if it has something to do with low coal levels…
