what's the story on pigua anyway? Is it a different way of saying Pek Kwar?

yes.
pi gua is a whole system. great saint pi gua is actually a monkey style. great saint is the monkey king.

pigua and pek kwar actually means the same thing but pigua is mando is pek kwar is canto - however here's the difference - pigua stayed in taiwan and is originally taught with baji quan eventually it was separated - pek kwar is hong kong and when it's bought up people immediately think of monkey style since tai shing pek kwar is so closely related - hope that helps
