happy new year!
Hey, happy new year. I know I'm just a tad early for the exact day (tomorrow) but hey, cny is a 15 day event! I thought I better do a shout out before it passes.
and now, your regularly scheduled litany of weirdly romanized versions of gong hei fhat choy.

it is the year of the earth rat.
there are 5 elements, metal wood water fire and earth. and 12 animals so 5x12=60 years or yi jia zhi. so if you live to be 60 years old, you already completed one jia zhi. US will elect a new president. China will host the summer olympics.  there is a huge snow storm prevailing thruout southern China, all the infrastructure were snowed in, no bus, no train, milions of people are stranded in front of Guang Zhou train station. every one was hurrying home for the new year or spring festival. the goods were slowed down in China, too, meaning prices will be higher in US.  -- happy earth rat year.

oops.
it is a fire rat year. the whole family is supposed to clean the house, take showers and dress new or clean clothes. the mom and sis will be cooking a lot of meals that would last a few days so that the whole family will have a feast or big dinner on new year eve. and then on new year day, there will be still a lot of left over. we then go and greet every one including all relatives and neighbors and wish every one a happy new year. the senior people will give away lucky money in red enevelops. usually with new bills/notes, too. --
