Two other books that I feel no martial artist should be without are:
The Art of War, by Sun Tzu, of course, and: The Book of Five Spheres, by Miyamoto Musashi. The english title of this is usually The Book of Five Rings, though Spheres is a more accurate translation, I believe. BTW, one last book that I'm just now starting, but looks promising is: The Book of Balance and Harmony. It appears to be a collection of Taoist writings. Any other books that everybody should add to their collections? I'm always interested in adding to my collection. [This message has been edited by blacktsun (edited 08-03-2000).]

The book of five spheres, or scrolls as I call it, has very good mental teachings. But physically, Musashi only conentrates on the Katana and the Wakizashi. Japanese for the Greatsword and the sidearm. Many people use the mental teachings for businesses also. I admire your tastes in the books.

Good books, one and all, but I think somebody gave warning to me once that there was a Musashi translation that was sub-par. Unfortunately I don't recall which one this was.

I have seen and read many versions. The one that I seem to have the hardest time with is the Thomas Cleary translation. Maybe it is me, but I feel that he leaves much out in comparision to some of the others like Samuel Griffith.

You left out the Tao te Ching, Bruce Lee relied heavily on Taoist philosophy for Jeet Kune Do. Would it not make sence to learn his philosophy's roots?
