Richard Lester's "The Three Musketeers" totally kicks ass
I just thought you should know. It combines great swordfighting and hilarious slapstick in a way that anticipates the best of Jackie Chan's stuff. Apparently there's a really good sequel, too.

The sequel is Return of the Musketeers (circa 1989)
There is also a 1999 sequel as well, but I don't remember what it's called.

Nah, the immediate sequel from '74 (shot at the same time as the first one, ala LotR*) is The Four Musketeers; the 1989 sequel is The Return of the Musketeers. But close.
* Richard Lester told the cast he was only making one movie, though - it turned into a huge fiasco with them claiming he ripped them off.

There was a lot of controversy about the sequel
The sequel was the Four Musketeers, but it was filmed as one movie, then broken into in production, much to the dismay of the actors who were only contracted to make one movie. The fight choreography was good fun, done by veteran choreographer William Hobbs, but I wouldn't say it anticipated Jackie Chan's stuff. You should look at the Gene Kelly Three Musketeers (1948) for that. That is more Harold Lloyd/Buster Keaton style, which admittedly inspried Jackie. Hobbs also did Rob Roy, The Man in the Iron Mask, and his masterpiece (in my mind) the Duellists. He wrote Fight Direction for Stage & Screen which is a fine view into western fight choreography, especially for stage.

Gene -
Nah, not the style of the fighting per se (although there is some fun stuff using impromptuly available stuff as weapons), but more that the tone of the movie anticipates say, "Project A" or "Dragons Forever." PS - "The Duellists" has just recieved the deluxe widescreen DVD treatment. Sweeeeeeet.

Are we talking about the ones with Michael York, Christofer Lee, Raquel Welsch, etc?
I love those movies. Some dangerous choreography in there as well. Sweet stuff, And the cinematography is verra nice. |

I've made my wife watch them like forty times. She suspects I'm just watching them for Raquel Welshc's cleavage, but the truth is, I'm watching the sword fighting, costumes, scenery, and acting, in ALL scenes where Raquel Welsch's cleavage is not present.

I still say it's more a take on the Kelly version. Don't get me wrong - I love those movies. Great fights, great actors, great cleavage, all around entertaining. But if you have a keen eye, you'll notice that D'artagnan leaves his sword behind in almost every fight scene. I would just like to follow him around a collect his discarded swords.
CSN- I just was reading about the new Duellist reissue in a magazine at lunch. That's awesome. What a great sword fight flick that was, eh?

Gene- You're not a fan Myster Science Theater 3000, are you?
I'd bet you are good at poking fun at all the inaccuracies of bad movies.
